Holiness, Godliness, Usefulness

Lesson 2: What Is Holiness?
"For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace." Rom.6:14
All of us desire to obey God. Yet a single meeting can cause us to stumble in anger. Every morning we promise, “I’m going to do better today.” Within minutes we have failed. Can the Bible help us in the real world, even with my sin problems? Yes! We have real hope. We are able to obey God’s commands. God calls all Christians to holy living.
Today many have a negative view of holiness. We think of strict rules, ‘holier than thou’. But holiness in Scripture is very positive. It was God’s idea. The word appears 600+ times. The book of Leviticus focuses on holiness. God commands His people to be holy.
“For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy.” Lev.11:44
What does it mean to be holy? There are many wrong ideas. Some groups have a list of do’s and don’ts: no smoking, no alcohol, no revealing clothing, no hand-holding, no rock music. The risk of this approach to holiness is the self-righteous pride of the Pharisees. If the requirement is perfect behavior, we will quickly get discouraged about our sin. Or we will convince ourselves that we are not sinners, and no longer need a savior.
About This Series
The goal of this series is to become more useful in serving the Lord Jesus Christ, as an instrument in the Redeemer's hand. The theme verses for the series are Ephesians 4:22-24, Philemon 11, 2 Timothy 2:21
- to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
- and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
- Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.
- Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
