Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards
May Breakfast Recap
Wednesday 25 May saw the inaugural Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards Breakfast take place. Over seventy guests joined us on one of the first very cold winter mornings for the year, which is a fantastic turnout! All our awards events this year will be hosted by Sjaak Kusters so the audience had a chance to get to know him, and Chamber Vice Presentation, Peter Helmore gave us a bit of background about the new awards format.
Chamber Awards - Nominate Now
We then heard two great stories from our highlighted businesses:
Breadwinner was incorporated in 1997 when the existing directors in John Welsh and Maarten Pinkster formed a partnership that has seen the business grow from strength to strength. The business turnover and employees has continued to grow on an annual basis with the business now employing in excess of 100 employees and the turnover reaching $20million.
The business is involved in contract catering and specifically makes handmade sandwiches for the likes of 7-Eleven, Starbucks, the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Tennis Australia just to name a few. On a good day, the orders can result in as many as 30,000 to 40,000 sandwiches being produced. Given the product, production is critical to their success and generally this is with very little lead time. This is an area that the business has excelled, with the achievement of 100% Supplier Award for seven years in a row with 7-Eleven and last year winning their Supplier of The Year Award.
India at Home
India at Home commenced operation in Jan 2004 after Rajesh Bhatia decided to take a risk and go it alone, moving away from his full time role as a Sales and Marketing Manager in a like for like business. Rajesh identified an opportunity via the limited products on offer here in Australia, which were not in line with the everyday food products being consumed in his native India.
Rajesh moved to Australia in 1995 on a student visa undertaking his MBA and working part time at a local Dandenong import/wholesale business. India at Home is involved in the importation of various food products such as spices, rice, noodles, sauces, pastes and currently offers a range of in excess of 5000 products.
We were then honoured to have David Parkin speak to the group, with the focus of his presentation around the mental and physical health of men.

Grand Final Charity Lunch
Guest Speaker - Chris Judd
This year's Grand Final Charity Lunch will be held on Wednesday 28 September, 12.00pm, at Sandhurst Golf Club. This is a fantastic annual event that has raised over $70,000 in the past ten years for some very worthy charities. Last year alone we raised a whopping $10,000, so lets see if we can beat this total this year! Please put this date into your diary NOW to avoid missing out!
We are very excited to announce that this year's Guest Speaker is Chris Judd. Last year's event was a sell-out, so make sure that you get in early to book your tickets. Booking forms will be up on our website in the coming weeks.
