Many congratulations to the Unity-and-Diversity-World Council (UDC) Cooperation Circle who is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year! UDC has been a pillar of the interfaith movement in the Los Angeles area since 1965. To celebrate their anniversary, URI Global Council Chair Kiran Bali interviewed Founder Leland Stewart about the group's interfaith chaplaincy program -- of which she is a graduate.

The URI North America Leadership Council helps provide support, guidance and legal oversight for URI on a regional level. We will have several open seats at the end of this year and hope you'll consider applying. Applications will be accepted between  Aug. 1 and Sep. 30. For more information click here.

  • United Nations International Day of Peace is fast approaching! Celebrated across the world on September 21, it is "a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples." See the Resources section (right) for more information.
  • The Parliament of the World's Religions is the world's oldest, largest, and most inclusive gathering of people of all faiths and traditions. The gathering will take place this year in Salt Lake City from Oct. 15-19. If you are planning to attend, please let us know

Welcome, Lalitamba!
 
We are thrilled to welcome a new URI family member! Lalitamba, approved as a Cooperation Circle in June, is based in New York City and has members around the country. They have come together to foster inter-religious harmony and global peace, and alleviate poverty. Lalitamba is working on projects locally and have been in in contact with URI friends in Africa with a hope of expanding internationally.

Since a earthquakes struck Nepal in April, life has been very difficult for the people of the region. Dr. Chintamani Yogi, a member of the Youth Society for Peace Cooperation Circle shares an update of life after the quake and how the work of Cooperation Circles continue:

"The earthquake not only demolished physical infrastructures in many districts but frequent aftershocks created a sense of unity among those who are alive. The hope that was raised by whole-hearted people continued through support, prayer, collection of food, blankets, utensils and direct service in the highly devastated districts..." Read more.

International Day of Peace Postcard
International Day of Peace (IDP) - September 21 - is just 67 days away. This year's theme "Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All," seeks to highlight the importance of all segments of society to working together for peace. In this time, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon encourages us to "stand with the millions of people across the world who are suffering the devastating impact of violence and conflict." In this spirit that we share ideas and resources for your 2015 commemorations and celebrations!
  • From interfaith services, to service projects such as tree plantings, food and school supply collections and distribution, to cultural events, Cooperation Circles around the world have been celebrating IDP for many years. Click here to see event reports from previous years and get inspiration for this year! We also have media tips, sample proclamations and more in our resource section.
  • Print and share the International Day of Peace poster and postcard and read the United Nations resources.
  • From Sep. 11-21, URI North America Affiliate, We, The World, will hold the "11 Days of Global Unity" campaign  –  a worldwide convergence of festivals, concerts, forums, rallies and other programs promoting peace, justice, sustainability and transformation.
  • The Compassion Games, an initiative of the The Compassionate Action Network International Cooperation Circle, are played yearly from Sep. 11 - 21. This year's theme is "Compassion is Our Power Source."
  • With 13 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates leading this campaign, One Billion Acts of Peace hopes to inspire 1 billion acts of peace by 2019. Go to their website and be inspired by the acts they've recorded, and submit your own to enter to win a trip to New York to celebrate IDP.
