HolidayCheck’s journey with Scala and Akka
HolidayCheck is the largest German speaking online travel site/agency, having been online now for more than ten years. In their peak-booking season they have over one hundred million page impressions per week.
They started with a typical LAMP stack which worked well for the initial site as it was meeting usual business goals and classical web business. But later problems arose. The biggest problems being related to platform/code complexity, stability and performance.
They felt that both the Scala and Akka held a great deal of promise for his project and began to investigate them more closely. There was no dedicated evaluation to use Scala or not, it simply was clear that Scala added significant value (because of Functional Programming, the collection API, Traits) so they used it. They wanted to use Actors for parallel processing, so Akka was a natural choice.
Typesafe aids CCAD in managing cable operations
CCAD is an organization that helps cable companies worldwide deliver audio/video content to subscribers. It focuses on the development of current and future conditional access (CA) technologies and supporting control system infrastructure, which is deployed among major operators
worldwide.
Initially they were using the traditional java based stack but later they faced the problem for Ensuring that subscribers should have access to only the audio/video content they have purchased or subscribed to. Then they moved away from java to Scala.
Scaling developer productivity, improving code quality and removing locking and contention were reasons that influenced them. Scala makes development noticeably faster and makes them feel more confident that the end result will be correct. The quality level of what they produce with Scala, Akka, and functional programming techniques is so high. Their product marketing team and their product owner have made numerous comments about the technology stack’s contribution towards both this quality level and reduced qualification and regression testing.
