Grüezi members and friends!

The 'Buiräbähnli-Safari' Experience is a three-day hike (42.2 km, 2782 m) in the mountainous region of Engelberg where you can travel with small, private cable cars owned and operated by Swiss farmers. Buiräbähnli rides are suitable for people of all ages and is a fantastic hike for families. The cableway is the only way into the valley, and some children even take the cableway to go to school each day. However, the main purpose of the Buiräbähnli is for tourism: it relies heavily on tourists, because maintenance of the cableway costs over 40,000 CHF per year! Tourists can purchase the Buiräbähnli Pass, which gives access to all cable cars, for 28 CHF per person.

The first stop is on the foot of a steep hill to Zingelalp. The first night is spent in Berghof Brändlen (32 CHF, shared room without meals) above Wolfenschiessen, where Linda Schmitter and her family live.

The second day of hiking is via the Haldigrat to Bannalp. The Haghittä is nestled by its own Alp to Zmittag, where you can treat yourself to house specialties: various coffees with or without "Gügs" (brandy). The second night’s stay will be at the Chrüzhütte Bannalp (39 CHF, shared rooms for families with breakfast, pictured top right), where you will experience the native sounds of the Sonnenberg.

The last day will be a hike on Alp Oberfeld, where local Sepp Waser will greet you with the resonating sounds of his Alphorn—the locals refer to these sounds as the ‘Engelberger Echo’. Indeed, the hiking experience will resonate with you for days. The mountain farmers, small cableways and the Alps (‘Buiräbähnli-Safari') form an authentic piece of Switzerland and is a must see for keen hikers. Download an interactive hiking map of the Engelberg region.
