This time: The BCT showcased on BRUZZ TV, election time for our Board of Directors, Pregnancy in Belgium evenings now also in Ixelles and a playgroup for children with special needs.

The BCT on TV

Back in October, BRUZZ TV, which belongs to the network of Flemish media in Brussels, aired a segment about the BCT that shows exactly what we are all about: getting together, making friends with other families in similar situations (far from home, without an established social network), supporting each other, learning about pregnancy, birth and family life here in Belgium. Having fun.

Our playgroup centre at Imagine in Wezembeek-Oppem is the ideal place for families to let their children play in a safe and inspiring environment. There is a wide range of toys for babies up to pre-schoolers, fantastic soft play equipment, a well-equipped kitchen area to prepare coffee, tea, drinks and snacks for the children, amazing craft supplies, our library and enough space to sing, play and eat together.

With our local groups we give members the opportunity to meet other members who live near them. Meetings often take place in members’ homes or in parks or playgrounds and are ideal to socialise and find friends in the area. No need to know someone who knows someone – all our members are welcome to join any group!

Election time at the BCT

Every year at the Annual General Meeting in March, the BCT elects a new Board of Directors. Just like the organization overall, the board consists only of volunteers. Each of the currently 12 members of the Board is in charge of a team of volunteers who work within a certain area of responsibility. They oversee the many volunteers in their field, take decisions that will sustain and improve the future of the organization and make sure the BCT complies with the Belgian law for not-for-profit organizations.

For almost 40 years now (next round birthday coming up in 2018), the BCT has been able to provide its services only because of the dedication of its volunteers. Some give a little, some give a lot, some give their time regularly and some give it occasionally. Sometimes it is a certain expertise we need, sometimes just a helping hand. No matter what they can give, it all comes together in the end. We could not help those whom we help nor do all that we do without our volunteers.

Most helpers are members who would like to give something back to the BCT but, especially at the Nearly New Sales, we have many helpers from outside the BCT. The next call for helpers is just a few weeks away, so check out our Facebook page for details.

Elzenhof – The new location for our Pregnancy in Belgium evenings

About 10 minutes away from the European Quarter is the community centre of Ixelles/Elsene, Elzenhof. Supported by the Flemish Community Commission, this venue provides a large number of rooms of different sizes, perfect for BCT events. It is easily accessible by public transport and thus the perfect location for those living in the centre of Brussels.

Currently, (in addition to Imagine, Wezembeek-Oppem) we use Elzenhof for our Pregnancy in Belgium evenings. Couples can therefore choose whether they go to Wezembeek-Oppem (where it is easier to park) or to Elzenhof (which is closer to the city).

Address Elzenhof: Avenue de la Couronne/Kroonlaan 12, Ixelles/Elsene 1050.

More information about dates, locations and how to register for a Pregnancy in Belgium evening is available on the BCT’s website.

Focus on BCT support groups: Special Needs Playgroup

The BCT currently has 7 social and support networks, bringing together families in similar situations, providing members with friendship, exchange of information and support. The groups meet up on a regular basis, communicate via email or in Facebook groups.

One of these support groups is the Special Needs group, which also hosts a monthly playgroup. This regular meet-up provides the opportunity for children with special needs to play in a comfortable and understanding environment. They can also be together with their siblings for added confidence, as sessions are held at weekends at Imagine and of course the whole family is welcome to attend. This also provides the families with the possibility to share their experiences, discuss resources and get the chance to make friends with other special needs families.

The playgroup consists of a diverse group of children with different needs, ranging from light to severe, including physical needs. Because all families are in similar situations, the group creates a suitable environment that caters for everyone.

More information about our social and support groups is available on the BCT website.
