This time: upcoming happenings for parents and children, why the BCT can be a lifeline for families and our next Nearly New Sale.

The BCT – “a home from home“

The new school year is about to start! With this second issue of our Newsletter, the Brussels Childbirth Trust (BCT) would like to welcome the many new families arriving in Belgium full of expectations, maybe worries, and surely with a lot of questions.

The BCT as a non-profit organisation is a one-stop-shop for information and services on every aspect of being or becoming a parent in Belgium. But perhaps even more vital when starting a new life in a foreign country, the BCT with its fantastic network of families offers a great opportunity to meet people and make new friends through the many playgroups, interest groups or annual events.

If you want to find out more about what makes the BCT “a home from home” for our 1,200 member families, visit us on our website or like us on Facebook ( - or just start with this BCT-Newsletter!

Nearly New Sale

On 12 October 2014, the Nearly New Sale (NNS) is coming up again! This second-hand market is one of the biggest in the Brussels area for children's, baby and maternity clothes as well as all kind of related equipment and toys. The quality is outstanding as every item is hand-checked in advance. The NNS is the BCT’s biggest fundraising event and, like any initiative of the BCT, is entirely run by volunteers.

But this market is not only a great opportunity for buyers to find a bargain. It is also an easy and very convenient way to sell those items you do not need anymore, but which are still very good quality. It is open to everyone, members and non-members alike. On the BCT website you can find out everything about the NNS: selling procedures and guidelines as well as the dropping points in nearly every area of Brussels and its surroundings.

BCT Nearly New Sale:

Sunday, 12 October, 1.30 – 4.00 pm
Salle Communale de Wezembeek-Oppem
Rue Louis Marcelis 134, 1970 Wezembeek-Oppem

Weekly playgroups

“The BCT was a lifeline for me when I newly arrived in Belgium!”

This quote from a BCT-member summarises very nicely an important element of the BCT's mission: social life and networking. One of the best opportunities to link up with other families is our weekly playgroups at our main venue in Wezembeek-Oppem and our central-Brussels venue in Ixelles.

There are currently 13 playgroups organised around different themes and age groups. The main venue is designed especially with children in mind and is well-equipped for safe play, crafts, art and music activities.

And while the children are having fun in a secure and safe environment, parents have the opportunity of making friends or just having a coffee and a relaxed chat with other parents. Although of course only open to members, the BCT is more than happy to welcome interested parents and children who want to visit and try out the open and friendly atmosphere of our playgroups.

BCT Information Team

Information is key. This cannot be stressed enough – especially when you are trying to settle down as a family in a foreign country. Although Belgium is an open and international environment, it is still sometimes hard for newcomers to find the right information and to get advice – particularly if you do not speak the local language.

Do you need to find a creche or school, a babysitter or an English-speaking doctor? Why not ask those who have been there already? We at the BCT believe that information should be shared in any possible way. That’s why we not only set up a substantial database of practical information, but created a dedicated information team.

This group of volunteers answers all our members’ questions by phone or email, or directs them to other sources of information about pregnancy, birth, raising children or any other practical issue related to family life in Belgium.

More details about the information team is available on our website.
