Als ik in India bij leveranciers en ateliers kom, vind ik natuurlijk vaak de mooiste stoffen. Hieronder drie handbedrukte indigo katoenen (Ajrakh en Dabu prints) die ik tot gequilte jasjes laat maken. In juni zouden ze klaar moeten zijn..

Het doel van de april-reis naar India was ondermeer verdere verdieping van mijn blockprint vaardigheid. Dit keer deed ik een workshop dabu printing, een resist dye techniek met o.m. modder, een bewerkelijk proces. Voorspoelen van katoen, drogen, afdrukken met moddermengsel, bestrooien met zaagsel, drogen in de zon en in indigo bad dippen, drogen en nogmaals in indigo bad. Het afdrukken met modder vraagt veel geduld en precisie, veel meer dan gewoon met verf.
The object of the April trip to India was to widen my block print skills. This time I learned dabu printing, a resist dye technique in which (among others) mud is used as resist paste, an intricate and precise process. Rinsing the cotton, drying, printing with mud paste, sprinkle with sawdust, drying in the sun. Then dipping into indigo vat, drying and again dip in the vat.. Then indigo needs to be fixated still to cotton by cooking in salt. Dabu printing demands lots of patience, skill and precision, much more so then with normal paint.

Wilt u ook (de basis van het) blockprinten leren? Nathalie Cassee van Kashmir Heritage geeft op aanvraag blockprint les op papier of stof. Min. 6 personen, max. 12 personen. Vanaf woensdagavond 15 juni 2016 in Baarn (bij Utrecht en Amersfoort). Ook geeft zij op aanvraag op locatie les in Nederland, Belgie en Duitsland (min. 6 personen).
U leert meer over de achtergronden en technieken van het blockprinten. Wij hebben een eigen collectie houten stempels, maar kunnen die ook voor u op maat laten maken. Tijdens de workshops zorgen wij voor de nodige blocks, verf en papier. Indien u aan een speciaal project wilt werken, kunt u die tegen betaling afnemen (kussensloop, tafelloper of shawl).U kunt natuurlijk ook uw eigen stempels meenemen. Het is stimulerend om samen met anderen aan de slag te gaan en de ruimte te hebben uw afdrukprojecten vorm te geven. .

Of course you can also bring your own blocks. It is stimulating to work together with others and have ample space to work on your print projects.

U kunt nu een eigen handgeschilderde sits op katoen in opdracht laten maken. Een mooie levensboom (palampore) voor uw quilt of alleen een randje om in te lijsten. Sitsen werden handgeschilderd m.b.v. natuurlijke verfstoffen. Men maakte ze vanaf de 5e eeuw voor de Indiase markt en voor export naar Zuidoost Azie en West Azie. Vanaf de 17e Eeuw kwamen deze stoffen op grote schaal naar Europa en de Verenigde Staten. De stoffen werden gebruikt om kleding van te maken, maar ook als quilts, bekleding of woontextiel.

Chintz originated as a hand painted, mordant and resist-dyed patterned cotton cloth from India. It was made for domestic markets and exported to Southeast Asia and West Asia as far back as the fifth century AD and finally to Europe and onward to the Americas in the seventeenth century. The chintz was used to make garments, but also for quilts or upholstery or home textiles.
