Detail from Blackamoors V-Carve #1 by Damien Davis

This week
I've taken a lot of time away from the internet this week, and it's been great. Deep thought: What if the best holiday gift you can give someone is to pry their phone from their hands and forcibly delete both Twitter and Facebook? (Hey, social media is probably just a passing fad anyway.) On an appropriately analog note, for the podcast we interviewed three authors and talked about some books we've loved recently. I was also on the podcast No Place Like Home to talk about environmentalism, feminism, and a psychedelic experience I had at the Great Barrier Reef.

I'm reading
Wow, the tax bill is not just a tax bill. It's truly terrible. Amazon workers in Europe went on strike. Algorithms don't know everything. Life-saving text messages. How the sandwich consumed Britain. On "the need for a new home, a new space to fit your new size." The problem legacy of The Simpsons' Apu. Thinking through punishment for sexual harassment. The rise of comedian Michelle Wolf. How super-strong women shaped ancient civilization. How outmoded gender roles affect professional kitchens. The inflated promise of the American food hall. New Yorkers pushed past the end of the subway line. Where to have a near-death experience in Los Angeles. The cold-case killing of a beauty queen in Texas. David Grann's Lost City of Z and Eve Babitz's Sex and Rage.

This speech from Tracee Ellis Ross. The work of Mexican-American photographer Laura Aguilar (NSFW). White internet's love affair with digital blackface.

GIFT-spiration
All of these pair well with a donation to a cause your recipient cares about.

Sansevieria, because this affordable, good-looking plant thrives in darkness, flourishes despite neglect, and filters the air. Perfect for this political era.

Whetstone Magazine, $25, for the history-minded person who loves to eat.

Take Care journal from Girls’ Night In, $15, “for moments when self-care seems lofty.”

Artistic license by Hallie Bateman, $25, for artists who can’t bring themselves to embrace the label.

Popcorn air popper, $30, the gift that keeps on snacking.

"Women’s Sports" socks by Tuesday Bassen, $10, for the person who, like me, is really gonna try to become a WNBA fan in 2018.

Glossier moisturizing moon mask, $22, a facemask that gets better the longer you leave it on, aka it encourages laziness.

A digital subscription to the NYT or to a local newspaper. Or a museum membership. (LACMA for $60, Art Institute of Chicago for $105, Detroit Institute of Art for $65, etc.) I love gifts that are also cultural investments.

URL, $10, for the friend who hasn’t locked down a domain name.

Polemic card game, $15, because it’s surprisingly fun to argue about low-stakes stuff with your friends and fam.

The Fondoodler, $30, because I can't stop laughing at the perfection of invention. I'm sure you know someone who needs a hot-glue-gun but for cheese.

A book you loved this year, purchased from an independent bookseller. I love being able to make a personal recommendation.

Pie charts, aka a gift subscription to the members-only version of this newsletter, $5. Hey, I had to.
