Welcome to (hopefully) warmer weather, Spring and May


As you may recall, the Cape Cod Culinary Incubator was the recipient of a state grant earlier this year to provide cooking classes to at-risk youth in the Town of Barnstable. With the help of many individuals and departments in the town, we have begun a pilot program and have 10 kids that have started classes. We have enlisted the services of Chef Jeni Wheeler from the Faith Church to hold these classes. To date we have brought the class into the commercial kitchen at the Faith Church and this past week into the kitchen at the fire station in Hyannis. KAM Appliances has invited us to use one of their kitchens for an upcoming class and they will be heading to Star Market for a shopping trip. It is fun to watch them get excited about some of the food options and check out all the equipment. This first class will conclude in mid-June when they cook a full meal for their families.

Food Truck Friday a hit at KAM!

Our ‘Food Truck Friday’ event was held earlier in May at KAM Appliance in Hyannis.  Laura Gaito drove her food truck What The Truck over and donated some tasty food for all.

Big thanks also go to Barnstable Brewing and Truro Vineyards for supporting our fund raising activities with their donations. And, of course, we couldn't have done it without the support of KAM Appliances

Interested in Grilling?

Our next cooking class “Get your Grill On!”  will be on Wednesday June 12th; 2-4 PM.

Chef Kay Benaroch will have this class create some grilled pizzas and then move on to grilling a marinated steak to be served with Chimichurri sauce, salad with grilled vegetables and end with a dessert of grilled peaches and pineapple served with ice cream.  Class is $35 and limited

Comings & Goings

This month we say Thank You to Chef Alan Zox who has served as our Executive Director for the past two years. Alan is retiring and will be stepping into a board advisory role as he and his wife will be traveling more. You will still ‘see’ Alan via his recipes and continued contributions to our mission.
 
We also welcome our newest board member, Linda Davey. Linda is a veteran of the hospitality industry with a focus on food & beverage operations and customer service. She has worked in both large restaurant chains and small, local establishments, as well as contracted food service environments. In addition, Linda has taught courses in food safety, management, accounting, customer service, and basic food preparation skills at the college level as well as to industry professionals. A great addition to our team.

Richard Peal is manager of Leroux Kitchen in Falmouth, one of six locations, all in New England. He recently celebrated his third year at this cook’s paradise on Main Street, filled with everything you might need or want to make magic happen in your kitchen and have fun doing it.

Good for any day: Mother's Day Chocolate Cake


Mother’s Day is a time to remember and to celebrate the mothers in our lives. It’s always fun to make a special meal or to eat at a delicious restaurant when the weather is starting to turn warm and temperate.
 
Here’s one of my favorite chocolate cake recipes, which is always popular on Mother’s Day (or any day!).
