Help Support Our Programming Efforts

Tuesday, May 3 through 2016 Give Local Helena

Tuesday is a big day for many Helena non-profits, and you can make a significant difference for Cultivate Helena.

Local support matters, and you matter! We are participating in the 2016 Give Helena Local event on Tuesday, May 3. This is a chance for you to help support our programming efforts!

This 24-hour online giving event, organized by the Helena Area Community Foundation, has the goal of creating awareness and raising charitable dollars to support the hundreds of local Helena non-profits.

Starting at midnight on Tuesday morning, you can visit the Give Local Helena Leaderboard to review the various participating organizations, and donate to your non-profits of choice. We are hopeful you will consider Cultivate Helena as a worthy recipient of your support.

Dreaming Big with the Cultivate Youth Collective
Slated for Spring 2017

Although things have appeared quiet on the Cultivate Helena front over the last six months, it has been far from quiet behind the scenes. We have been working tirelessly, collaborating with the likes of AERO, Lewis & Clark Youth Court, Carroll College, West Mont Farm & Gardens, and the Helena Food Collaborative on a project we intend to launch in Spring of 2017: The Cultivate Youth Collective.

Modeled after the very successful Missoula program, Youth Harvest, this therapeutic farm project will provide unique and powerful experiential education, competency development, and rehabilitation opportunities for Youth Court participants with the goal of preventing them from becoming adult offenders.

By growing food for others, they will have the opportunity to interact with nature as well as prove they are integral members of the community with much to give back. Once they have harvested the crops they’ve planted, they will sell the produce from a mobile farm stand at very low prices to low-income sects of our community.

A community becomes resilient when everyone has something to give back.

We are very excited to announce that West Mont Farm & Gardens has committed to donating at least five acres of farm land to the Cultivate Youth project. We are actively seeking out grants to implement the program by the next growing season, spring of 2017. Check back often to see how we are progressing!

Refining Our Focus and Our Message

Cultivate Helena has gone through some transitions over this last year. To begin, we have some changes with our board of directors: Patti Borneman has stepped down as Secretary/Treasurer. In her place, Darby Bramble is our new Secretary, and new board member, Charles Parrett, will serve as Treasuer.

Coming into our third year, our board discussed at length where we wanted to focus our energy. We came to a consensus that our educational outreach overlapped with the efforts of other local organizations. So, we decided to narrow our focus, primarily working with youth in our community. This focus is reflected in our newly revised mission statement:

To promote and support sustainable urban gardening projects to educate area youth about healthy local food and nutrition, composting and sustainable gardening.

In addition to fine-tuning our mission statement, we have revamped our website. We look forward to keeping you regularly posted on our accomplishments, so check back often!

Our 3rd Annual
Square Dance
Friday, May 20 At the Holter Museum

Cultivate Helena will hold its third annual Community Square Dance to kick off the 2016 growing season and raise funds for our programming efforts. Old-time string band Balled in Burlap will provide music with Michelle Karcher calling the dance. You don’t have to be experienced to enjoy this event! Bring your dancing shoes and a dish to share.

The Holter Museum will sell beer and wine, plus beverages for the kids.

Starting at 6:30, Karcher will call easy dances for all members of the family. Then at 7:30, we'll begin the more challenging dances for those who don't need adult supervision; however, beginning dancers are encouraged to participate, as Karcher will teach the steps before every dance.
