Back to School Reminders


Beginning of the year reminders to help keep you sane

Now that we have headed back to school and are thinking clearly (hopefully), it's time to do some yearly tasks that often slip our attention. Here is a recommended list from the Association along with some tips:

  • Salary credit forms are due to Curriculum and Professional Learning by October 1st. After this date, you will need to wait until next year for that salary bump. If you are on H step, and fail to renew your credits, you will be reverted to G step for the next year. 
  • Join the Catastrophic Leave Bank. If you are already a member, you don't need to do anything. If you would like to check your status, call 916-686-7797 ext. 7099. (Have your Employee ID # ready.) The bank has fallen below the pre-set limit, so this year members of the bank will have one day (or two if you selected that option when you joined the bank) deducted from their personal sick leave accounts. Get the application and learn more about the Cat Leave Bank HERE. The deadline is tomorrow, October 1st.
  • Request a District transcript. You can do this by e-mailing Professional Learning Transcript Request for PD Hours in the Outlook e-mail system or by using this e-mail directly: STAFFDEVTRANSPD@egusd.net. Click HERE to refer to the "How to read an EGUSD Additional Unit transcript" for help in deciphering this document. Double check that you are on the correct salary step and that any units or hours that you have earned this year are accurately being displayed. In addition, you can learn more about earning salary credits by referring to the Professional Learning Handbook by clicking HERE.
  • Make a plan to complete your wellness rebate. In order to receive the maximum rebate, you must submit the wellness forms by May 16th, 2016. Read more about the wellness rebate on the EGEA website or at the EGUSD 2015-2016 Wellness Page.
  • Check your credential expiration date. This can be found on your monthly pay warrant on the bottom left. You should also receive an e-mail reminder when the time gets close, but it's easy to forget about it when you are busy.
  • Check your TB test due date. This can also be found on the bottom left of your pay warrant. Missing this deadline can be costly. If your clearance expires, you WILL be removed from the classroom. Again, you should receive a letter informing you that the test date is approaching.
  • Enroll or Re-Enroll in Disability. If you are a new hire you have 180 days from the start of school to submit your paperwork. If you are returning from leave, you have 120 days to submit the re-enrollment form. You can get paperwork for The Standard by calling the EGEA office at 685-4588.

Student Loan Forgiveness

Do you know that if you teach in a "high impact school," and have a Stafford and/or Perkins loans you may be eligible for having a portion of your student loans forgiven? 

Stafford Loans: If you have a Stafford Loan, teacher five consecutive years in a "high impact school", and have not consolidated your loans, you may be eligible for $5,000 or $17,500 forgiven. 

Perkins Loans: If you have a Perkins Loan, teach a "shortage area content" in a "high impact school", and have not consolidated your loans, you may be eligible for a percentage of your student loan forgiven (15% for 1st and 2nd years, 20% for 3rd and 4th years, and 30% for 5th year).

EGEA Executive Board


Last spring several new members were elected to the EGEA Executive Board. If you have questions or concerns, use the information below to contact your Exec Board Representative.

Disability Insurance
 


New hires have 180 days to enroll in disability insurance through The Standard. You will receive a packet of information and an application for enrollment during your EGEA orientation at your contract signing. If you have questions or need another application, please call Dayna at the EGEA Office at 916-685-4588. During this window of opportunity you can enroll with no medical verification concerning pre-existing health conditions. You can still enroll, but may need a health survey to be completed by your doctor. Otherwise you will have to wait for an Open Enrollment, which only occurs every few years. If you are returning from leave, you must complete the re-enrollment form within 120 days of returning to work.

Please note, the disability insurance open enrollment does NOT correspond with the Open Enrollment for medical insurance hosted by the district. 

Prevention


This month's focus on Prevention: Find a time to get a flu shot, increase your activity level to help prevent problems down the road, or make an appointment to see your primary care physician for your Wellness Visit.

This year, the EGUSD will continue the Wellness Rebate Program. To receive your maximum rebate, complete this process by May of 2016. Find out more about the Wellness Program HERE.
