SPRING ARRIVES AT ROUNDOAK

The first signs of Spring is always the birth of the new season lambs.  Over the last week or so several of the Roundoak flocks have given birth to singles and twins.  Unlike much of the publicised lambing that is seen on tv, the Roundoak flock of Hebridean sheep lamb on their own outside.  A lot of modern farming methods mean that many farms choose to lamb in doors due to the fact that a lot of the sheep are obese and have large lambs which often presents troubles, hence they need constance vigilance.  The Hebridean sheep are a slow growing breed and take much longer to come to maturity.  We therefore tend to lamb a little later in the season, normally around April time.  The new growth in grass and the slightly milder outdoor conditions normally give the lambs a good start.

NEW GUEST FACILITIES AT ROUNDOAK

Due to the continued growth of visitors coming to Roundoak to see the Highland Cattle and Hebridean Sheep which are unusual in this part of the Country.  There is also a significant increase in caravaners and campers to Roundoak, therefore we have now invested in a new shower and toilet facility for guests staying at the farm requiring this convenoence.  The new facility has just opened and those staying on the farm wishing to use the facilities are charge a small fee.
Roundoak is off to a busy 2014.  We have had many caravaners coming from the start of the year and we continue to have many bookings for the rest of the year. Many of our visitors are returning for the second and third time, the site is now in its third year. visitors to the site are often shown round the barns which at the present time are being used in connection with calving and any husbandry needed for poorly lambs

'Aurora'

Our first calf of 2014 that was born last month has settled in well at Roundoak.  We have decided to name her 'Aurora' after the Aurora Borealis we had back in February this was the suggestion of Janet Adams on our Facebook page. We look forward to many more calves to following the the next couple of months.

After a visit to the farm Nathan and Ruth the owners of The Butchery with outlets Bermondsey and Forest Hill London have taken delivery of the first consignment of beef and lamb from Roundoak Farm with promises of further orders as a result of the quality of meat and the way it is farmed.  Roundoak are pleased to have this new association, with what is a new breed of butchers that are passionate about real meat from great farmers.
