Talbot Piping Weekend 2014

The Celtic Piping Club is proud to host the 2nd annual Talbot Piping Weekend on 8-10 August 2014.

Held in the tiny town of Talbot "where the gold rush began", the weekend will provide opportunities to get together with other pipers to play, learn and socialise.

The weekend is ideal for players of, or people interested in, the Scottish smallpipes, uilleann pipes, Northumbrian smallpipes or any other form of Celtic pipes. This includes both mouth-blown and bellows-blown instruments. Partners/spouses are also welcome.

The programme will include music and technical workshops, maintenance, meals, socialising and informal playing in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Our guest tutor for the weekend, Pat Lyons will be running a reed making workshop on the Saturday afternoon.

Visit our website to check our the full program or to register for this great weekend of piping. Just head to the 'Talbot Piping Weekend 2014' under the Events page.

Some of the fun at a fireside session at the Talbot Piping Weekend in 2013

Arrived in Ireland!
Notes from Matt Horsley's uilleann piping adventure in Ireland

From Matt's blog...

"I’m writing this from Limerick where I’ll be based for the next couple of months. I’ve just had a very intensive three days of piping with Mikie, which has been amazing (with a side of depressing). Amongst other things we tried to correct six years worth of bad habits, get my pipes playing to our satisfaction and assemble a set list for a solo show I’m doing before I leave. Some serious challenges in there which is always welcome.

I also had to pleasure of sitting in on a very fine session at Flannery’s and seeing an equally excellent gig featuring Matt Molloy, John Carty and friends at University of Limerick. Some effortless and beautiful music making there. This weekend marks the start of the Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy (aka Willie Week) in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, the biggest event of the summer school season. Thoroughly looking forward to many, many, many tunes and a certain quantity of wild hedonism. I’ll try to post something from there."

We'll be posting some of Matt's journey in our newsletters, or you can follow his adventure at matthewhorsley.com.

Boxwood New Zealand in Waipu, 5-10 Oct 2014

From Boxwood...

"Join us in beautiful & historic Waipu, New Zealand for five days of musical discovery and fun with David Greenberg (Cape Breton fiddle & baroque violin) and Chris Norman (flutes, small pipes); both artists who seek a broad context and canvas for their work and infuse their view of traditional music with influences as diverse as Irish, Acadian, Breton, and baroque idioms. Boxwood New Zealand is a magical experience with very limited enrollment and small class sizes, so please register early.

Registration is now underway
here for Boxwood New Zealand 2014. The beautiful and vibrant community of Waipu New Zealand will welcome Boxwood once again to celebrate, explore, and build upon the extraordinary cultural links between Cape Breton Nova Scotia and Waipu, NZ. We'll continue to keep class sizes small resulting in a terrific week of musical discovery and fun. Mark your calendars for another triumphant week with David GREENBERG (Cape Breton & baroque violin) & Chris NORMAN (flutes, whistles, small pipes) and Shelley PHILLIPS (Celtic harp, songs, and oboe). The reviews of our 2013 week were off the charts - the music, jam sessions, dances, concerts, food & setting are superb. A BWNZ Kia Ora is here."

National Celtic Festival at Portarlington

One year on from the launch of the Celtic Piping Club, we once again hosted another acoustic Celtic Piping Concert at the National Celtic Festival at Portarlington (Victoria) during the long weekend in June.

Special guests who performed at the concert include Juan from Senor Cabrales on Galician pipes, the Likely Celts from Warrnambool, and Ali Levack from Fèis Rois (Scotland) who played some amazing tunes on the Border pipes and whistle. Thank you to these and all the other fantastic pipers and other musicians who performed at the Celtic Piping Concert. It was great to see such a great variety of Celtic pipes being showcased by talented musicians.

We also had a great turn up at the Pop-up Piping Session on Saturday evening. A couple of highlights were Nick Martin performing the Fox Chase on uilleann pipes, and Nick & Matt playing Colonel Fraser (photo).
