A Note from the President

EOA TRIO and College Access & Success Colleagues,

What a busy past couple of months this has been for the Region!  At the time of the last President’s Newsletter, I was in the middle of the EOA Prez Tour. It concluded with visiting the remaining Chapter spring conferences: Illinois/Indiana TRIO, Tri-State (Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin), and Michigan (MI-CAPP). I am amazed with the amount of quality workshops that were delivered at the Chapter levels. Members who attended their conferences are fortunate to have had such effective leadership in their Chapters.

During the May Board meeting, EOA and Minnesota TRIO co-hosted the Sphere of Influence Luncheon and an Alumni gathering. The Sphere of Influence events are designed to expand the reach of the Educational Opportunity Association (EOA) and its member Chapters by providing opportunities for networking and collaboration.  Attendees include college access and success program staff, teachers, counselors, university staff, funders, businesspeople, and politicians. The EOA’s hope is that after each event new connections are formed between attendees and EOA members, and future collaborations will be nurtured. Both events were well attended. Ninety- plus alumni from the Minnesota area networked with the Board and other fellow alumni. It was a great evening for all!

Congratulations to all of those who were awarded Talent Search Grants! Sending positive thoughts for those who received noticed that they are in the funding band.

Roxanne Gregg
President
July 2016

Congratulations to our very own Past President Kaye Monk-Morgan for being elected as incoming Chair-Elect. She will be sworn in this fall at the Annual COE Conference. EOA continues to have strong leadership representation at the National level. She will represent us well!

EOA National Girls in STEM Conference

The Second National EOA Girls in STEM Conference was held at Wichita State University on May 20-22, 2016. 225 pre-college and 50 college-aged young women spent the weekend engaged in STEM focused activities, mentored by women currently working in STEM fields, and learning about what it takes to go to college. Many thanks to the conference Co-chairs, Past President Kaye Monk-Morgan and Illinois President Misty Williams and Wichita State University for hosting another successful student leadership conference.

National Men of Excellence Conference

The 2nd Annual Men of Excellence conference was held June 2-4 at Northern Illinois University. There were over 200 students, staff, and faculty that participated in this year’s conference. The conference this year had representation from: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kansas, California, Virginia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas, New Jersey, New York, and Florida. The conference dealt with the tagline “Be R.E.A.L.”; with R.E.A.L. standing for Responsible, Educated, Authentic, Leader. Congrats to Co-chairs LaBrian Carrington and Thomas Jefferson for a job well done.

Plans for the 42 Annual Conference in St Louis are coming along nicely. The conference committee has a lot of exciting things in the works. You can find more information here: 42nd Annual EOA Conference
This summer EOA lost another TRIO giant, Dr. George Jackson on Sunday,July 3, 2016 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He was the President of MAEOPP 1979-80. He was a TRIO champion who worked with several TRIO programs in Michigan and Iowa. He was responsible for introducing UB, ETS, SSS, and McNair to Iowa State University. He was a very dynamic and eloquent speaker who often spoke at several Iowa TRIO Day celebrations. Dr. George Jackson served in many roles during his tenure at Iowa State University, including Assistant Dean of the Graduate College and he was President of the Ames Chapter of the NAACP. He will be missed. Sending our love and condolences to his colleagues, friends, family and loved ones.
