A Note from the President

EOA TRIO and College Access & Success Colleagues,

As we close the first month of the New Year, there are many exciting things to share with the membership. The EOA leadership team represented the region at the Council for Opportunity in Education’s 2015-2016 Board retreat and meeting. Led by our very own Chair Trent Ball, the Board received training on fund development and finalized the Council’s 2016-2018 Strategic Plan. The Board concluded the week engaging in a lively conversation with Dr. Minor, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education. The Board was able to express deep concerns over the Competitive Priorities. The following week, thanks to COE efforts, the Department sent three articles to assist the community with addressing current priorities.

EOA’s winter Board meeting was held this past weekend on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. Following the past year’s Board model, the Board co-hosted with Indiana TRIO a Sphere of Influence breakfast and TRIO Alumni reception. The breakfast was attended by College Access and Success professionals in the Indianapolis area. Both events were a success and potential partners were established. The ELI Evaluation and Enhancement committee met during the Board meeting, as well, to work on the future of the ELI program. Great progress was made.

Lastly, sending positive thoughts to all of those who are writing for Educational Talent Search grants this cycle. Wishing successful uploads for you all by this Friday, February 5th.

What Works Clearinghouse Survey
Let our voices be heard!

For the past two grant cycles, the Department has requested the TRIO community to use research from the What Works Clearinghouse. Unfortunately, many of the articles don’t apply to the TRIO specific population and other barriers may make the Clearinghouse difficult to use. The Clearinghouse is requesting our feedback until the beginning of March. It is imperative that the community participates in this survey. To help frame our response, Dr. Arendale, who manages the EOA National Best Practices Center, has provided guidance on how we should respond as well as some suggested language. Please take time to complete the survey so our voices are heard!

Congratulations to COE for 35 Years of Advocacy!

 2016 ACT Summer Internship Program
TRIO undergraduates have a great opportunity to participate in a Summer Internship Program through ACT in Iowa City. The Program offers a competitive stipend and housing allowance for select students. Positions cover a range of disciplines and TRIO undergraduates are encouraged to apply.

COE Chair Ball, Representative Clay, EOA President-Elect Zalite

To welcome in the 2016 New Year, the Council for Opportunity in Education Board Chair, Trent Ball and Educational Opportunity Association President-Elect, Valdis Zalite attended an event at Harris-Stowe State University to participate in the VIP program for the 30th Annual Statewide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Kick-off Program for Missouri.

During their visit, Mr. Ball and Mr. Zalite  were able to thank Senator Blunt, Representative Cleaver, and Representative Clay for their support of TRIO and EOP programs in addition to taking a few photos. During the discussion, Representative Clay reminded them that he has always been a TRIO supporter!

We greatly appreciate our congressional leaders who support and advocate for TRIO and EOP programs; this is a great start to our 2016 advocacy efforts!
