Freedom, Inc.'s Dance Troupes are Winners
Viv Ncaus and Breaking for Justice competed in the dance competition at the Wausau Hmong New Year.  Viv Ncaus placed first in traditional Hmong dancing and Breaking for Justice placed third in the modern dance category.  Both troupes meet weekly to choreograph their own dances.  Congratulations for all their hard work!
Bless our Home
Over 50 guests joined Freedom, Inc. at our Open House and Hu Plig (soul calling ceremony) on Tuesday, November 29, 2016.  There was dinner, entertainment and kwv txhiaj  (traditional ballad songs) sung by our Wisdom elder members.  The elders performed a hu plig ceremony for the New Year and determined that 2017 would be full of love, joy and good fortune.
Making a Difference on the National Stage
Zon Moua, Freedom Inc's Youth Director presented on a panel called "Facing Race in Asian America" in Atlanta, Georgia on November 10-12, 2016.  Facing Race is a national conference presented by the Center for Racial Justice Innovation.  This is the largest multi-racial, intergenerational gathering for organizers, educators, creatives and other leaders.

Speaking Out!

Staff at Freedom, Inc. are often asked to speak at the University of Wisconsin-Madison or other community events.  It is a chance for us to educate about our services and the issues we care deeply about.  Here are some of the talks our staff presented in November!

Nyiaj Muas "Domestic Violence in Later Life," Department of Children and Family

Ti Banks "Voices of Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Individuals," Daily Herald Panel

Alix Shabazz "Present Movement Moments and the Civil Rights Movement," UW Madison Class on History of the Civil Rights Movement

Upcoming Events

Hmong Women Global Summit
In December 2016, a network of 30 community advocates from Thailand, China, Laos, Vietnam and the US will convene in Thailand to work on issues towards ending gender-based violence and building safe, strong, and thriving families.  Freedom Inc. was instrumental in helping to organize this summit and fundraise.  Five of Freedom Inc's staff will be attending the summit to help grow a movement that builds international solidarity to transform harmful practices.
