SCC From the Start
"My high school sweetheart Sam (now husband!) and I knew right from the start that South Central College was the school for us. We appreciated the fact that SCC was a local college that was closely connected to the community. Sam knew he wanted to go into agricultural programs, and I wanted to pursue accounting. SCC has strong programs in both studies. I considered other colleges, but appreciated that South Central College could get me into my accounting studies immediately. Therefore, the choice was easy."
"The accounting program at South Central College exposed me to a range of disciplines within my area of study. Today, I am a CPP, Certified Payroll Professional. Going through the SCC program, I was exposed to accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, etc., which really helped me define the direction my career took after I graduated. In fact, it was the payroll course that I took at South Central that really propelled me into the specialization I have today.
Last year, I was able to approach SCC about getting an internship started in my department. It was very rewarding for me professionally to bring in an SCC intern, but it was just as rewarding personally. I have a great South Central College success story, and this was the perfect opportunity to give something back."
"The big ‘ah-ha’ moment for me came in an accounting class taught by Larry Tieszen. Anyone who has taken this class will know the project I’m about to reference. The assignment required us to do an entire payroll by hand! It was a 40-hour project which included timesheets, paychecks, journal entries, and tax statements. Everything had to be done in pencil and using the old green sheets. After all the entries were calculated we had to present the final figure. The minute I completed the project with the same number as the instructor, I knew that I had found a career I would forever be passionate about."
