Alumni Update:

Returning to SCC to Develop & Teach a New Welding Certificate Program

Joe Volk started out like many students at South Central College. He graduated from high school in Morristown and enrolled in a technical program, started working in industry while going to school, and continued to work with some advancement opportunities and some job changes as the economy shifted. Now he’s back at South Central College trying to do for students what Dean Odette, his Welding instructor in 1990-1991, did for him.
Joe Volk
Joe started working at SCC well before any students were on campus to develop the curriculum. “I’m trying to give students a skill set to learn welding processes and establish a foundation for moving up to team leader, supervisor or engineering positions. Advancing from welder to operator or another position within a company is not to be feared. I did it and they can do it,” Joe stated.
The 16 credit certificate program that Joe teaches includes Blueprint Reading, OSHA general industry safety and welding safety, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and Oxy-Fuel Welding & Cutting. It’s a new, one-semester program on the Faribault campus of South Central College.

Trip to South Africa Changes a Life
By Kandice Heenan, 2014 SCC Graduate

Kandice Heenan in Africa
Traveling would put me in debt. I’m too busy. It’s so far away; I would miss my family. I don’t know the language or the culture— everything would be so…foreign. And that scares me.

It is kind of scary, isn’t it? The idea of leaving the comfort of our home, our friends, our country, even if just for a few weeks, is unnerving. When presented with the opportunity to travel to South Africa, the butterflies I felt were equal parts excitement and fear. And the fear almost won. But then I realized this; it would be far more terrifying to grow old and feel as though I had never experienced anything remarkable. To look back on my life and wish I had stepped away from the familiar…to regret never having witnessed other ways of being…to only know a single story; now that is terrifying.

Give to the Max Day

Give to the Max Day
One of the most valuable gifts you can give is the gift of an education. We would like for you to consider a gift to South Central College that can be used with other gifts to make a big difference for our current and future students.

In the coming days, many worthy organizations will promote GiveMN.org and Give to the Max Day on November 13th. While we accept gifts every day to support students, if you are moved to give back on Thursday, November 13th we hope you will consider supporting us.

Donate to the Faribault Campus or North Mankato Campus.

SCC’s Fall Job Fair will be held November 19th (Faribault Campus) & November 20th (North Mankato Campus) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Numerous employers with full- and part-time job opportunities are scheduled to be in attendance. This is a FREE event and an excellent way to meet and talk with prospective employers. (Parking is free in all lots on campus for the Job Fair).

• For students and alumni, please attend the Job Fair to visit with employers about job opportunities and be prepared to complete an application and/or interview for open positions.

• If you have job opportunities available for alumni and students, please email Candy Laven or call 507‑389‑7225 to learn more about participation.

Weekly job announcements, the job board, and career fairs are only a sampling of what SCC’s Career Center can continue to do for our alumni.

The Big Show

Remember When?

The Big Show

It was 1983 and everything was “big”. Big Hair, big bows and so much more. For more than a decade South Central sales and marketing staff (our very own Roberta Moorhouse) and students hosted an annual fashion show as part of a larger open house event on campus. Students borrowed the latest in clothing from local business such as the Lorraine Shop and Matt J. Graif. Click here to visit the Alumni blog for more photos from “The Big Show” as well as other shows over the years.
