Club 4s Final draws big crowd

Unsung heroes clinch the match

Front-ended by some spectacular bowling from unsung heores Michael Seery and Michael Edgar, the Club 4s was captured by Stuart Eden's rink, including the ever steady Sam Bucknall.

Just when opponents Leigh Marshall, Damir Martinic, Dan Coulson and skip David Mann had almost staged a dramatic comeback by holding six on the penultimate end, calmly Stuart Eden sent down a superb delivery to draw shot and make the last end a formality. (more photos on our Facebook site)

End of Autumn
Hampton Bowls Club looks great from the Vola Miles Rose Garden--don't you think?
Edithvale wins our Easter Saturday romp
Claire & Glen Baskett and Ian Thomas are pictured after taking the money at our Easter Saturday tournament.  Smoothly run by ex VLBA President and Hampton stalwart Margaret Radford, there was also a huge raffle with many prizes from our ever-willing sponsors.  Check them out at
New Management teams to be announced at our AGMs
The Club's Board and the Bowls Committee (unisex now!) and the Selection Committees for both Midweek and Saturday Pennant will be unveiled at the forthcoming AGMs, with no voting required since the nominations were equal or less than the available places.  Those missing places need to be filled, and of course there are numerous other contributions members can make (from Marketing to Maintenance) so it will be an objective of the meetings to identify those that want to help in a non-elected capacity.

Cliff sets demolition under way
Cliff Layzell starts the process of demolishing the workers' building next to the Margaret Radford green, where council contractors will complete that job and build our brand spanking new equipment shed. Watch it grow!  Barry worked closely with the Bayside council on this project, which is funded by them.
Presentation Gala Night gets them bopping
Another superb Presentation Gala Night when our bowlers were honoured. Well done Dennis and Barbara for organising it. Highlight of the evening was the Strictly Come Dancing team of Dee Rankin and Brian Stynes burning the floor.  Dennis used the big wheel above to hand out major prizes in the raffle.
What to do in Winter?
One of the new bowlers asked me what bowling is going on in Winter.  Well, the Indoor Pennant side on Monday evenings has made a good start to the season, only just going down to lose its last match and is placed in the top 3.
The hit of the Winter will be "Neil's Rules" an entertaining slant on 2-bowl Triples hosted by Neil Webster every Saturday at 12.30 pm.  With generous prize money you can get out on the green on a Saturday, whatever the weather.
Farewell to Barry
Our popular club manager, and Director of Administration, Barry McLaren resigned recently and will be leaving in May.  We all recognise the efforts Barry has put in over the last 10 years, and wish him all the very best in his future role.  Come back and see us soon, Barry.
U3A attracts new members
Instructor Theo Witte shows some of our U3A Lawn Bowls class how to welcome a toucher.  Many of these students have now joined the Club
Hazy wins Club Minor Singles
Modestly Alan Hayes surveys the main green where he won the Club Minor Singles (for bowlers of less than five years).  In a thrilling encounter with brand new bowler Wally Korczynski, Allan had to dig deep to come back from 12 shots down.  As fresh talent Alan will offer a lot to the club's playing strength in coming years.
If we don't know where you are, how can we look after you?
We are moving on to the new membership system provided by Bowls Victoria which is a better system than our present one.  It is important that the data we have about you (which is kept under a strict privacy policy) is accurate.
Over the coming weeks you will be asked to verify your details held on file, so you get a chance to make sure they are correct.
Club Mixed Pairs settled by final shot
A final that never featured more than a two-shot lead by either team was finally won by Dennis Williams and Nellie Kostadinova over Rob and Ellen Coulson, but only with the last bowl of the day!
Leading by one shot on the last end, Ellen put in three bowls less than six inches from the jack.  And when Dennis’ first attempt at conversion left his bowl in the ditch, Rob decided to cover the very back.  Dennis calmly stepped up and played the perfect weight onto Ellen’s bowl to move the jack to Nellie’s two waiting bowls just behind—a great match-winning shot for a 12-11 final score.

End of an era
The last Ladies Committee meeting ever was held this month and it was not without a touch of sadness that the hard-working committee met for the last time.  Of course next year we are unisex.  That's the price of progress......
