    Your Morning Lemon Juice

    Starting the day with a glass of warm water with lemon juice is a traditionally used remedy with many health benefits:
    • Aids digestion and detoxification. Lemon juice is similar to the digestive juices found in the stomach and it helps the liver to produce bile, which helps keep food moving smoothly through your body and gastrointestinal tract.
    • The digestive qualities of lemon juice may also help relieve symptoms of indigestion, heartburn and bloating.
    • Lemon water is a mild diuretic, and this may help with detoxification.
    • Because our bodies don’t make vitamin C, it’s important to get it from our food and drink. Lemons are a good source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is important because it rejuvenates our skin, helps to heal the body and has immune-boosting properties.
    • Many people find that lemon water boosts energy and mood. Swapping that morning coffee to warm lemon juice may lead to a boost of energy levels without the caffeine crash.
    Your morning lemon juice in warm water is now more important than ever. Whilst the lemon may provide a little vitamin C what is important is its effect on the digestive tract. When the lemon juice reaches your stomach it helps the action of your stomach acid. Stomach acid is really important as it kills all the nasties such as bacteria, viruses and parasites that we ingest. Most of our immune system is located around our digestive system as this is the easiest way for nasties to get into our body. By keeping your stomach acid high you are helping your immune system to work.

    Choosing to prepare a healthy drink for yourself as the first thing you do is a powerful affirmation that you are loving yourself and a great way to start the day. Start your day with a glass of warm water with lemon juice.
    To make lemon water :
    1. Into a cup or heat-stable glass squeeze half a lemon 
    2. Add boiling water,
    3. Now add cold water to make it a suitable drinking temperature.
    4. To make the drink as healthy as possible, use filtered water and organic lemons.
    You may choose to add:
    • Some mint sprigs
    • Some grated ginger
    • A sprinkle or some cinnamon bark
    Picking the best lemons
    • When buying lemons, look for ones that are yellow and, if possible, organic. If the fruit is still green, it isn’t fully ripe.
    • Thinner-skinned lemons are juicier.
    • Keep away from lemons that look dull, wrinkled or excessively hard.
    To make preparing lemon water easier (and when you have excess lemons), juice several lemons into an ice cube tray and freeze. Pop a cube into a jug of water to have lemon juice at the ready anytime.

    To get real health benefits of lemon water, you need to drink it consistently, and you need more than just a single wedge of lemon in your cup.

    Your morning routine

    What is your morning routine? It may well have changed in the last few weeks because many people are now working from home and, for some, their kids are not going to school.

    How we start the day can have a huge influence on how the day proceeds and how we feel. Do you start the day anxious and stressed about what will happen? In these cases, it seems we start our stress levels early and they continue to escalate and more things go wrong. An easy way to explain this is to think about the day you are running late for work, and what happens is you get every red light, and then all the parking spaces are gone and so even though you were a few minutes late you end up being way later as it seems the world conspires against you.

    In these stressful times, if we can spend a few minutes being grateful, and let’s face it, if we are living in today’s society there is still lots to be grateful for, we start the day with a better emphasis and a more positive slant - and it maybe takes a minute to do. To start, read and reflect on this.

    Then take another minute, and place your hand on your heart, close your eyes and take a deep breath in and think about someone or something you love. Just one minute we all have a minute. And feel how much better you feel. You can do this throughout the day whenever you are feeling stressed and feel that you can’t do anything, you can at least help you feel better. And if you feel better, that will help your loved ones feel better too.

    Next, you can smile, a smile costs nothing and yet it lifts our spirit and can lift the spirit of those around us - when you smile you just feel better.
