REMEMBERING JESSIE METTER

"She was the most dedicated admin volunteer I have ever encountered" (SPEC Director Dan Rogers)

A wise and wonderful elder spirit has departed the world.  Jessie Metter, one of our most dedicated volunteers died recently after many months of battling metastatic breast cancer.   As soon as we heard the news, the emails flew back and forth amongst her SPEC colleagues with expressions of sorrow for the loss of this admirable woman and remembrance of the characteristics that made her an indelible part of our SPEC community.

With permission of her family, we are planning a memorial fund in her name to benefit administrative support.  We hope you’ve appreciated getting to know her just a little better through this article.  If you’re inspired by her story, consider being a donor to the Jessie Metter Memorial.  Or become an administrative volunteer.  We’d love to have you join the SPEC team but, in the spirit of Jess Metter, “go and do good wherever your heart leads you.”

SPEC'S SOLAR PANELS UP AND RUNNING AGAIN

June 11th, 2014 marked a beautiful partnership between MEC, Bullfrog Power and SPEC. At precisely 1:30pm we flicked the switch to the solar array on the roof of the MEC building on West Broadway turning the sun's rays into electricity. This system is expected to produce 2,900 kWh annually, which is enough electricity to power a modest energy efficient house. This was a particularly monumental moment for SPEC as it marked the rebirth of this system. Back in July 2005 SPEC set up Vancouver's very first solar system to be plugged into the utility grid. The solar array stayed on the roof of the SPEC building at 2150 Maple Street and generated power for us for almost 9 years. In 2013 our beloved building was on its last leg and we had to decommission our solar panels. Vancouver Renewable Energy connected Bullfrog Power and MEC to SPEC which resulted in a great opportunity for partnership. Now, thanks to MEC for providing the roof space and Bullfrog Power for funding the project, the solar panels are working again and we are excited to announce we will be delivering solar tours there this summer! Please stay tuned for more information and enjoy the video of the event.

WORLD OCEANS DAY CELEBRATION

Thank you for all of your work in making the World Oceans Day Celebration a success! On June 8th, at Kits Beach, we saw over 300 enthusiastic people join the clean up.  A big thank you to Surfrider Foundation for leading this event.

We'd like to thank all participants and sponsors, including Whole Foods Market (Robson store), RBC Royal Bank, MEC, Kits Yacht Club, CPAWS-BC, Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Vancouver, Starbucks, Switchblade Surfboards and Sitka. A big thank you too to the Oceans and Lights band.

From the participant surveys we learned that 92% of respondents felt the cleanup impacted them personally and that they would make more changes to their decisions around household and packaging waste.

Did you know that the most common item found was cigarette butts (surprised?). The research team found 335 cigarette butts in a 100 meter transect.

It was great to be a part of the event with you. Thank you once again!

Great News! We have been selected as a Community Chest recipient throughout April, May and June at Whole Foods Market. Bring your own shopping bags to the stores on Robson street (West End) and/or West 4th Ave. (Kitsilano) and you can donate 10 cents to SPEC!
Now is your opportunity to join the SPEC Interactive Urban Gardening classes taking place in Kitsilano this Spring/Summer.
