News from the Studio

It's the time of year to reflect on the past and look forward to the future.  While many people are setting goals and resolutions, I plan to just keep doing what I am doing.  I do what I love each and everyday and have no intention of changing that!  2014 was a very productive year in many ways, but especially with my paintings.  Now I wonder - what new paintings will fall out of my paintbrush in the coming year?  My goal?  Continue painting as much as I can and continue to keep learning and improving everyday!  This past year, I was fortunate to meet many new people at Caprice Fine Art & Co Studio Gallery and at the art markets.   I look forward to seeing you all again when you stop by my Studio for a visit.  Now I wonder - who will I meet this year?
One gift from the past year has actually been writing this newsletter.  I had planned on doing a newsletter for many years, with the intention of sharing my latest paintings, discussing my passion for art, and of course hopefully selling the odd painting.  I never imagined it would be so much more than that!  I truly appreciate the feedback, not only from customers and followers, but also from my family and friends.  It has been a great communication tool and I had no idea I would enjoy the creative process of writing.  For all of you reading this right now, thank you for being a part of my art world and I look forward to many more years of being in touch with YOU!

New Paintings

In this newsletter, I have the privilege of sharing some happy customers with you!

'Unexpected Gifts' diptych, oil on canvas, 8"X16" & 8"X16"
Private collection, Winnipeg, Man
During the summer I had a couple visit from Winnipeg and the wife fell in love with two paintings that were a diptych. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term diptych, this refers to two separate paintings that are hung together as one but each painting can stand alone (as the above photos demonstrate). The only problem was the paintings were yet to be completed.  A few days later the husband returned to purchase them as a Christmas gift for his wife.  I completed the paintings and gift wrapped them.  Over the holidays, they returned and I had the great fortune of being included in a very special, emotional moment.  The gift was unexpected and did the husband ever get that one right!  And as if the moment wasn't great enough, they also commissioned me to do a painting of her Mom's garden!  Wow! I have the best job ever!!

Mieke & Caprice with her new paintings 'Unexpected Gifts'.

My latest commission painting was for a family from Calgary who recently had to give up their condo in Kimberley due to family commitments.  They were very sad to have to leave Kimberley and asked me to do a painting of the view from their condo.  It was a pleasure to do this painting knowing that it will bring back many happy memories for them!  If you are interested in a commission painting, please email me to set up a private consultation to discuss your needs.  It is always a thrill for me to paint something special for my clients.

Happy New Year!

On a personal note, my Mom (who is also my best friend) has been through serious medical issues over the past few years.  Thankfully, she has fully recovered and her health is good again.  The best Christmas gift I could have ever asked for was being able to hug her on Christmas morning.  Although I have never taken our relationship for granted, I do treasure the moments even more now.  I know that many of you reading this newsletter are suffering with health issues or have family members that are.  My wish for the new year is for great health for all of you and your families!  See you in 2015!!

Book of the Month

"Gordon Smith Don't Look Back"
by Andy Sylvester

I pre-ordered this book last June and have been patiently waiting for it to arrive in the mail.  It somehow wound up under the Christmas tree (Mom's are good at that sort of thing)!  It was worth the wait!  Although I have not finished reading it, so far it has been a great read and more importantly, the color plates of Mr. Smith's paintings are excellent!
To say I am inspired right now is an understatement!  Mr. Smith celebrated his 95th Birthday in 2014 and he is still producing large commission paintings...some of the best paintings of his career.  I would say that he is certainly in the top 5 of my all time favorite painters.  He not only knew some of my other favorite painters (Lawren Harris, Jack Shadbolt and Clyfford Still to name a few)....but he actually studied with them.  Can you imagine?  When I unexpectedly came across an original Gordon Smith painting in Vancouver it literally stopped me in my tracks and knocked my socks off.  The way I see things, that's the definition of a great painting.  I hope this book will inspire me to paint better paintings! I would love to meet him one day...what a dream!
