Featured Art Documentary:

Georgia O'Keeffe:  A Woman on Paper

An amazing, strong artist that is a huge inspiration to me!  She is known as the "Mother of American Modernism".  This was an excellent documentary showing her work, her life and her home in New Mexico.

News from the Studio

Hard to believe August is already here.  Hope you are having a fabulous summer!  I have been in a bit of a painting dry spell…yes the dreaded dry spell!  Rarely does this happen to me during the summer but with the lousy weather and the renovations we have been doing on the Studio my inspiration has been waning.  For a bit of a change I dusted off the old watercolours and gave them a go!  They haven’t seen the light of day for many years so it was fun experimenting with a different medium.  My friend Jeanie stopped by and we did some painting in the backyard.  Click here to see more photos on my Facebook page from my watercolour adventure!

The change in medium sent me in a new direction and I am especially excited to be back sketching again.  There is nothing more relaxing than sitting outside with a pen and a sketchbook!  These will not be finished paintings available for sale but these studies will eventually be repainted using my oil paints.  It’s all part of the creative process!

I have also been sitting back and relaxing for a bit.  I’d like to share a quote that my business coach Vicki just posted “It’s another of the often ironic wonders of nature that you need to do less in order to do more.”  -Hugh Culver.  I find this quote to be so true.  Just re-charging the old batteries leads to higher output later!  Cleaning the Studio, organizing my blank canvases, ordering art supplies, reading my art books.  Another important part of the creative process…especially when things have been so crazy busy for months on end.  I feel like I’m on a bit of a holiday without leaving home!

New Paintings

My clients arrived from Calgary to view their recent commission painting.  I have to be honest, this painting was a challenge!  Who knew I would have so much difficulty?  That is what I love about doing commission work…it sends me in new directions that I otherwise I would not go.  No chance of being stagnant when I am asked to paint a wide range of subject matter for a wide range of individuals.  The painting is a gift for the woman’s brother who took the photograph of the sunset over a beautiful lake in Alaska.  It was challenging because I can normally take a bit of artistic license when I paint but since it was his own photograph, I had to make sure that it not only felt like the place, but also looked like it!  I think I succeeded!

Some good news!  Caprice Fine Art & Co will now accept Master Card, Visa and American Express at the Studio Gallery!  It’s been a long time coming but we are finally keeping up with the times!  Please keep in mind that all available paintings are posted regularly on the Caprice Fine Art & Co website.  You can find the website here to purchase paintings or order a commission.  If you have further questions please do not hesitate to email me!

I am offering 2 - 6 week “Painting in Oils” classes at Centre 64 Art Gallery starting in September.  Classes will be Sunday afternoons or Thursday evenings.  Spaces are filling up quickly for both sets of classes so book your place now.  Please go to the website for more information.

Painting from the Vault!

As a painter, travelling is certainly an important part of the business.  Nelson, British Columbia is one of the most inspiring of towns!  This painting was done in 2002.  Fun colors, eh?

Happy Dog Days of Summer!

I am gearing up for a hectic month of August.  Several visitors have already planned trips to the Studio Gallery…I have them penciled into the calendar and am looking forward to their arrival.  This is one of my favourite parts of owning a gallery!

Please mark August 6th on your calendar as I will be at the ‘1st Saturday Art Market’ from 11:30-4pm.  You will find me in my usual place in front of the Spirit Rock Climbing wall in the Platzl.  Please stop by to say hello and check out what I will be painting.  With a little luck some of my students will be there painting as well.   The July Art Market was a great day…beautiful weather, good music, lots of art, plus I had fun painting with a couple of my students!  Please go to Facebook for more photos.

Painting at the July "1st Saturday's Art Market".

I will also be taking part in the Columbia Basin Culture Tour on August 13-14 from 10am-5pm along with other artists from the region!  You are welcome to tour artists studios during this two day event.  Please go to their website to view my profile and to download the tour directory.  I look forward to seeing you during this event.

Of course my Studio Gallery is open daily from 11am-9pm.  There are rare occasions like Market days when I will be closed, so please be sure to email me if you are making a special trip.  I do not want to miss you!

Have an EPIC day!

Book of the Month

Watercolours - David Milne

I am normally drawn to oil paintings, but I have always been inspired by the watercolour paintings by David Milne.  He has certainly influenced my recent watercolour paintings!  This is an excellent book with great colour plates of his paintings.
