"Art in all it's various activities is trying to tell us something about life.  Art must include in its study of nature the whole universe if it is to envisage some aspect of the universal truth and help humanity to become conscious of the meaning of life."

News from the Studio

People frequently ask me "do you paint everyday?"  I wish the answer was yes, but the fact is there are times when I have to set the brushes down and focus on the business at hand.  When I am painting I turn a blind eye to all the other jobs that need to be done and just focus on painting.  Then there comes a time when I simply must get caught up.  This whole month my job actually felt more like work as I tended to things like ordering new signs for the Studio, catching up on paperwork and emails, getting rugs cleaned and repaired, etc, etc.  My busy summer season is just around the corner and the Studio needs to be ship shape for when you all come for a visit!  Visitors have already started trickling in so I am anticipating a great summer.  I finally have my desk cleared and loose ends tied up so that I can focus on painting in the coming month.
So, long story short is that the news from the Studio is pretty darn dull this month!  The one exciting thing that I do have for you is my brand new website!  I spent the majority of the month at the computer working on the website and I am thrilled to share it with you.  It was a long process and I am glad to have it finished.  Please take the time to check it out and let me know what you think.  There are several new things on the site, particularly the newsletter archive where you can read all of the past issues of the monthly newsletter.  I have also posted high resolution photos of all the paintings that are available for sale.  There are many more changes and I hope you will enjoy!

New Paintings

I did manage to get a bit of painting done.  I had planned to post my completed "Waterlilies" painting in this newsletter, but I am still adding the finishing touches.  It is very close to completion, but these things cannot be rushed.  Look for it in the next newsletter.
In the meantime, here is one of my abstracts for you to enjoy:

'High Alpine Creek', palette knife, oil on canvas, 14"X11", available for sale from  No charge for shipping in North America and no tax!

Paintings from the Vault!

'As Above, So Below', oil on canvas, 60"X36", corporate collection, Canmore, AB

Many paintings have special stories attached to them and this one was no exception.   I LOVED painting this painting!  It was one of those pieces that was special to me and was exhibited at my solo exhibition in 2002.  Since the painting was 5 feet tall I could not reach the top half of the canvas so I had to paint it upside down!  I loved watching people's reactions when they walked into the Studio and saw that!

Photo of me with 'As Above So Below' at the "Here I Am" Solo Exhibition, September, 2002.

The painting was purchased by Morrison Homes for their new show home in Canmore, Alberta.  The owner intended to hang it at the top of a staircase so that the painting could be seen when entering the front door of the home.  You can imagine the owner's surprise when I informed her that the title of the painting was "As Above So Below".  How applicable for their chosen wall in their beautiful show home!  I love it when a "plan" comes together!

Art Lessons

I am gearing up for a month of art lessons.  So far upcoming students range from children to seniors and in between!  Just goes to show painting at any age works!  It's always fun passing on my knowledge so if you are up for some lessons just drop me an email.

Happy Spring!

I hope the Easter Bunny brought you lots of chocolate!  I am looking forward to a month full of painting.  So happy to be back working at a job that doesn't feel like work!  Wishing the same for you...enjoy every minute and remember to stay in touch!  If you have friends or family that would be interested, please forward this newsletter.  Thanks!

Book of the Month

'Jock Macdonald -Evolving Form'
by Ian Thom & Michelle Jacques

I've been patiently waiting for this book to be released and it was worth the wait!  Continuing on with my books on Canadian painters, Jock Macdonald is one not to be missed.  His paintings are reminiscent of some of my other favorite painters like Lawren Harris and Jack Shadbolt.  I love to read about their life stories.  Can you imagine being on that paint trip to the Rockies in 1944 with Jock Macdonald and Lawren Harris?  Wish I could have joined them...
