Welcome to Independent Publishing Now, IBPA's monthly e-newsletter that features the hottest news and information from IBPA members.

It's hard to believe that fall is officially here and that we're already in the middle of October! IBPA's Executive Director, Angela Bole, and Chief Operations Officer, Terry Nathan, spent the second week of this month in Frankfurt, Germany at the world's largest International Book Fair. As always, it was an honor to represent IBPA member's titles. Angela and Terry's time at the fair was dedicated to meeting with international contacts in order to assist members in licensing the rights to publish their titles throughout the world. October literary birthdays include E.E. Cummings (10/14/1894), Friedrich Nietzsche (10/15/1844), Oscar Wilde (10/16/1854), Arthur Miller (10/17/1915), Sylvia Plath (10/27/1932), Ezra Pound (10/30/1885), and John Keats (10/31/1795). October 17th is 'Wear Something Gaudy Day,' October 19th is 'Evaluate Your Life Day,' October 21st is 'Count Your Buttons Day,' and October 27th is 'National Tell a Story Day.'

Trenace Rose, author of Akashic Alphabet, recently received an email from the Office of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, with glowing words of praise for her book. Published by Wayne Dementi, Akashic Alphabet also won a Gold Pinnacle Book Award in the Spiritual-Inspirational category and a Living Now Spirit Award in the Living Now Awards' Outstanding Book of the Year category. Trenace says that she is honored and grateful for the success of her book.

Exciting news for author Randall Reneau! His novel, Diamond Fields, picked up two awards in 2014: Finalist (Thriller) in the 2014 Eric Hoffer and NIEA Book Awards. Diamond Fields previously (2013) won Grand Prize (overall fiction) and First Place in Five Star Publications' Royal Dragonfly Book Awards. More recently, his latest novel, Ruby Silver, received Honorable Mention at the 2014 Hollywood Book Festival. His fourth novel, South of Good, was published in September by CreateSpace.

Janet Angelo of IndieGo publishing was featured in a recent Publishers Weekly magazine article about editing in the indie world. Janet, the editor and publisher of IndieGo Publishing, has edited nearly 300 books for independent authors since 2005. She has edited Penny Reid's Knitting in the City Series since the first book, Neanderthal Meets Human, and is proud that Penny has now been contacted by the Bent Agency in NYC and has a movie deal is in the works. Edwin C. Bearss, author of The Petersburg Campaign Volume II.
The Petersburg Campaign, Volume II: The  Western Front Battles, September 1864 - April 1865, by Edwin C. Bearss with Bryce A. Suderow, has been selected as the winner of the 2014 Douglas Southall Freeman History Award, which is awarded to the best published book of high merit in the field of Southern history. Ed will be awarded with a plaque and a $1,000 prize. Dr. James G. Caster of the MOS&B Literary Committee said that the book "is a splendidly woven treatment" of the Petersburg campaign. The Petersburg Campaign was published by IBPA members Savas Beatie LLC, a leading military and general history publishing company. 

Dave Bricker, author of titles such as The Blue Monk and creator of PubML™.
Dave Bricker was recently interview by The Omnivore about his memoir, IPPY award-winner The Blue Monk. Commenting on the memoir, Dave expressed, "As a writer, I wanted to try my hand at capturing the essence of the deep solitude, grand adventure, rich color and transcendent beauty," of the sailing adventures he embarked on beginning in his late teens.The Blue Monk, an eBook, was created using Dave's PubML™ plugin that he created for WordPress, which allows users to publish with HTML. A typographer and book designer, Dave's goal is to make eBooks as inviting and elegant as print books.

Vanessa Blakeslee recently won an IPPY award for her debut short story collection Train Shots, published by IBPA Member Burrow Press in March of 2014. The collection was also long-listed for the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. Over the summer Blakeslee was awarded fellowships for summer residencies at both the Edward Albee Foundation and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Train Shots was one of Burrow Press' first titles to be published with national distribution and it is currently in its second printing.

Your Guide to Marketing Books in the Christian Marketplace by Sarah Bolme, co-founder of CREST Publications, was a finalist in the 2014 International Book Awards, which honors excellence in publishing. Now in its Third Edition, Your Guide to Marketing Books in the Christian Marketplace has won 4 awards since it was first published in 2006.  James Cox of Midwest Book Review calls the book "an essential read and reference, especially and strongly recommended for those new to writing and publishing for a Christian readership.”

10/25/14 - Boston Book Festival with IPNE - The Independent Publishers of New England (IPNE) will have their own booth at the Boston Book Festival (BBF) on Saturday, Oct. 25 in downtown Boston.
