Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to Independent Publishing Now, IBPA's monthly e-newsletter that features the hottest news and information from IBPA and its members.

IBPA hopes you had a lovely Valentine’s Day/President’s Day weekend! We sure did. Our CEO, Angela Bole, and Project Coordinator, Mimi Le, participated in the San Francisco Writer’s Conference (#sfwc16) Feb. 11-14. If you stopped by our table or ran into us in the halls, it was a great pleasure meeting you! It’s always wonderful to see both familiar and new faces.

If you missed us at SFWC, we hope to see you at IBPA’s Publishing University. At PubU, you'll join 300 publishing professionals from across the country for a two-day, must-attend, networking, and educational event focused specifically on issues important to indie publishers and self-published authors. There’s still time to register! IBPA members save $100 when they purchase tickets at http://www.publishinguniversity.org/#!register/c24vq.

Now, on with the show! IBPA members can send notice of their accomplishments (TV appearances, special mentions, book signings, etc.) to mimi@ibpa-online.org. We look forward to featuring you in a future issue!

Sincerely,

Your IBPA Staff:
Angela Bole, Terry Nathan, Mimi Le, Patti Grasso, and Joanne Kenny

Pictured above is a still shot of Carrie reading Ripple Grove Press' Mae and the Moon during an episode of Portlandia. Don't miss The Gentleman Bat on the nightstand!
Ripple Grove Press' books were recently featured on IFC's popular show, Portlandia! The special episode (season 6, episode 3) aired on February 4, 2016. Ripple Grove Press is a family-owned children’s picture book publishing company. RGP's hope is to have their books find their way to the cozy spot on the floor and be the last ones read at bedtime -- and indeed that happened in this episode!

Author Karen Casey Fitzjerrell and the cover of her award-winning title, Forgiving Effie Beck.
IBPA member Karen Casey Fitzjerrell received notice December 15, 2015 that her novel, Forgiving Effie Beck, was named one of Kirkus Reviews Best Historical Indie Novels Of 2015. The book is author-published under WKMA Publishing. It won the Will Rogers Gold Medallion Award and the EPIC eBook Award previous to the Kirkus announcement. The fast paced story takes place during the Depression and is about what can happen when good people "look the other way." Congrats, Karen!

The deadline to apply for PW's Fast-Growing Publishers feature is February 22, 2016.
Publishers Weekly is again calling for submissions to their annual Fast-Growing Publishers feature. If you qualify, we hope you'll apply. We want to see lots of IBPA members on the list! To be included in the feature, presses with annual net sales of $2 million–$10 million should submit the following information: net sales figures for 2013–2015, the number of employees in those years, and the number of new titles released. The list is open to indie presses and self-published authors. Deadline to apply is Feb 22, 2016. More info here.

On February 1, 2016, Quarto Publishing Group USA, the American division of London-based Quarto Group, acquired the Harvard Common Press, an independent publisher primarily focused on cooking and childcare. The purchase has added “hundreds of titles” to the Quarto backlist as well as over 25,000 recipes. HCP will become an imprint of Quarto Publishing Group, with editorial and production operations running out of Quarto’s Beverly, Mass. office. Harvard Common Press has been an IBPA member since 1999. We wish Adam and Bruce of Harvard Common Press best of luck with their new endeavors!
Award-winning author Rhonda Rees accepting her Publicist of the Year Gold Award.
Award-winning PR veteran Rhonda Rees was recently honored with the Publicist of the Year and Stars of PR Gold Award. On January 22, 2016, the Bulldog Reporter featured a piece on Rhonda, highlighting her career and success in PR and book publishing. Rhonda has wrote an award-winning industry book, Profit and Prosper with Public Relations®: Insider Secrets to Make You a Success, which she self-published through her own Aseity Press Publishing. Back in July, IBPA ran her article My Battle with Pirates in the Independent. The article examines online book piracy and lists several ways to confront this prevalent and persisting issue.

The Florida Authors and Publishers Association, an IBPA affiliate organization, held a regional event in Jacksonville on January 30, called Marketing Yourself and Your Book. The 4-hour workshop exposed authors to a variety of useful resources to assist them with promoting themselves and their book(s). They were given an opportunity to interact with other authors, publishing professionals, and experts in various forms of marketing. Marie Fenn, President of the Amelia Island Book Festival, said: "FAPA did a great job with this workshop. Lots of interesting little tidbits, even for experienced marketers like myself. I learned a lot today." The workshop was co-sponsored by OnLine Binding and Florida State College at Jacksonville.

On January 6, 2016, the Washington Independent Review of Books featured Bacon Press Books in Meet the (Small) Press: January 2016. In the article, Michele Orwin, publisher of Bacon Press Books, explains how it's name was "inspired by an obscure kitchen implement." Discovering an old iron with a pig on it with the words ‘Bacon Press' at a Michigan antique shop, Orwin and her husband decided that if they ever started a press, that would be a great name. To date, BPB has released 11 titles, including reissues of three books: Kate Blackwell’s You Won’t Remember This; Ann McLaughlin’s Sunset at Rosalie; and Judith Podell’s Blues for Beginners. Orwin has also put out eight other original works through BPB, divided equally between fiction and nonfiction. Bacon Press Books has been an IBPA member since 2014.
The cover art for Read to Me by Judi Moreillon and illustrated by Kyra Teis.
On January 29, 2016, CBS DFW did a wonderful news piece on Friends of the Dallas Public Library and Star Bright Books. According to the article, mothers of every new baby born at Parkland this year (more than 10,000) will receive a copy of a board book, Read to Me, written especially for them to share with their children. The board book is available in Spanish, English, and Vietnamese, based on the three most prevalent native languages of new mothers who give birth at Parkland. Judi Moreillon, a library science teacher at Texas Women’s University and author of Read to Me, originally wrote the poem in 1997 for a teen pregnancy program in Tucson, Arizona.

"[Longtime IBPA member] and independent publisher Sourcebooks launched a reader voting campaign that will give grant money to three nominated bookstores. Anyone can nominate their favorite bookstore. Sourcebooks will award the winning bookstore with a $3,000 prize; two additional bookstores will each receive a $637 prize. As part of the campaign, Sourcebooks will also give weekly prizes to those who submit nominations. The campaign began January 4, and runs until February 19, when the winning bookstores will be announced" (via Publishers Weekly). Sourcebooks was founded in 1987 and follows its independent vision of publishing extraordinary authors and unique books with readers in mind.
