Welcome to Independent Publishing Now, IBPA's monthly e-newsletter that features the hottest news and information from IBPA members.

With Thanksgiving exactly a week away and gratitude being the presiding sentiment of November, much of the IBPA staff's thoughts have been dedicated to the appreciation of our members. Whether communicating with you through email, over the phone, or in person, we are sincerely grateful for our members and all that they bring to this association. We look forward to sharing some exciting new Member Benefits in the near future that we hope will serve as a token of our gratitude! Have a great Thanksgiving!

November literary birthdays include Kurt Vonnegut (11/11/1920), Voltaire (11/21/1978), George Eliot (11/22/1819), C.S Lewis (11/29/1898), Jonathan Swift (11/30/1667), and Mark Twain (11/30/1835). November 1st is Authors' Day, November 3rd is Cliché Day, November 15th is I Love To Write Day and November 26th is Cake Day.

Valerie Woods, author of Katrin's Chronicles
Valerie Woods, author of Katrin's Chronicles: The Canon of Jacquelene Dyanne, Vol. 1 was recently a finalist for the Jessie Redmon Fauset Book Award at the L.A Leimert Park Book Fair! The novel is set during the turbulent times of social change in 1968 on the south side of Chicago, where African American sister sleuths Katrin and J. Dyanne become swept up in family mysteries, neighborhood political schemes and the discovery of a legacy of psychic talent.

Marcia Fine's The Blind Eye - A Sephardic Journey has earned First Prize in the Historical Fiction category of the NABE Pinnacle Book Achievement Award for the Summer of 2014. The novel has also won First Prize from the Arizona Author's Association. With three historical novels and a satirical series set in Scottsdale, Fine has been a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Award, Foreword Book of the Year, Best Books Award and USA Book News, a featured selection by Beauty and the Book's Pulp Queens, a First Prize winner in Satire/Humor and selected as a "Top Ten Book of the Year" by

Linda Carlson, author, owner of Barrett Street Productions, and reporter for IBPA's Independent magazine, was recently featured on Business News Daily and in the National Association for Female Executive's newsletter. Carlson's Business News Daily feature covers the importance of thank you notes; Carlson's feature came about after she responded to a HARO inquiry. Carlson contributed a piece on 5 Cost Efficient Strategies for Promoting Your Business, Practice or Association for NAFE's newsletter. The article highlights low-cost techniques businesses and organizations can utilize to create visibility.

IBPA Board Member Brenda Avadian of North Star Books was included in PR Newswire's profile on Caregiving Blogs. Brenda's blog, The Caregiver's Voice, "serves family caregivers and professionals who work with adults with cognitive impairment or dementia caused by Alzheimer’s, stroke, related illnesses, or trauma." Commenting on TCV's inclusion in PR Newswire's profile, Brenda said, “It was a ‘WOW’ surprise... Lots of hard work producing and featuring quality content over the years was rewarded with this recognition. Thank you.”

Carolyn Beaucahmp, author of The House on the Nickel
Author Carolyn Beauchamp published her book, The House on the Nickel, earlier this year. The House on the Nickel follows Alex, a student that stalls on a writing assignment on Monticello, drops his head on his computer screen, and ultimately finds himself at Monticello. Carolyn's journey in writing began in grade school with a piece in the local paper about school activities; she has also written poems and memoirs. Carolyn founded KidAdbooks Publishing in 2013 and lives in Orange County, California, where she grew up. Mark Nelson's The Wastewater Gardener
Synergetic Press has an exciting, new publication: The Wastewater Gardener: Preserving the Planet One Flush at a Time by Mark Nelson. The Wastewater Gardener "takes us on a global expedition to learn how we are wasting the world’s dwindling supplies of fresh water by flushing away a very valuable resource, our own human wastes!" Nelson is a founding director of the Institute of Ecotechnics and has spent several decades conducting closed ecological system research. Nelson was recently interviewed by Alaska Public Media Radio about his book and research in a segment called Peak Water

Wigeon Publishing released its fourth book, Connie Saindon's Murder Survivor's Handbook: Real-life Stories, Tips & Resources on Sept. 25 to coincide with National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. This new book comes on the heels of Wigeon's Dare I Call It Murder?: A Memoir of Violent Loss, written by Larry Edwards. The book became an best-selling memoir, won Best Published Memoir at the San Diego Book Awards, and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Wigeon will be releasing two, new titles in 2015: Bull Run to Appomattox: The Civil War Letters and Diaries of Oney Sweet and The Greatest Cattle Drive.

MaryAnn F. Kohl, IBPA Board Member and owner of Bright Ring Publishing, attended the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Trade Show in September. MaryAnn was able to display the prototype of her new book, Action Art: Hands-On Active Art Adventures (May 2015), at Legato's booth, her national distributor. Legato's president, Mark Suchomel, is also an IBPA Board Member. Along with Legato, the booth represented books from Publishers Group West. The constantly busy and well-attended booth was headed by Leslie Jacobs (PGW/Legato) and Cindy Heidemann (Seattle area book rep).
