Dear IBPA,

Welcome to Independent Publishing Now, IBPA's monthly e-newsletter that features the hottest news and information from IBPA members.

For the IBPA staff, much of September has centered on preparing for future IBPA events including The Frankfurt Book FairPublishing University and the Benjamin Franklin Book Awards. Frankfurt is just around the corner and while Publishing University and the Benjamin Franklin Awards aren't taking place until April 2015, we want them to be bigger and better than ever! Stay tuned for more details. 
 
September literary birthdays include Roald Dahl (9/13/1916), Agatha Christie (9/15/1890), Stephen King (9/21/1947), F. Scott Fitzgerald (9/24/1896), William Faulkner (9/25/1897), Shel Silverstein (9/25/1930), T.S. Eliot (9/26/1888), and Truman Capote (9/30/1924).

A revised edition of Linda Kelly's Deadheads: Stories from Fellow Artists, Friends, and Followers of the Grateful Dead will be reissued by Skyhorse Publishing in 2015 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the band, in a deal arranged by IBPA member, Peter Beren of the Peter Beren Agency. Deadheads compiles interviews with fellow artists and musicians, friends and followers of the Grateful Dead who tell their stories and discuss how their lives were intertwined with their experiences of the band. Included are interviews with the late Timothy Leary, John Perry Barlow, the Band's chronicler and spokesperson, Stanley Mouse, Poster Artist and creator of the famed Dead logo, David Gans, radio producer and host, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and many more.

Tom North, author of True North.
Hugh Jackman and Tom North appeared on SiriusXM Indie Talk Radio-XL Channel 104's "Success without Stress" with host Bob Roth in June. The program airs on Sirius XM Indie 104 the last Friday of every month, with replays throughout that weekend. North is the author of True North - The Shocking Truth about "Yours, Mine and Ours and has won a Living Now Award Gold Medal, is Recommended Reading by the Washington Times, has garnered rave reviews by Writer's Digest and is an Amazon Best Seller. North is represented by IBPA Member Barbara Howard of Barbara Howard Marketing/PR.

Ron Yates, the author behind titles such as Finding Billy Battles, was recently invited to the Kansas Book Festival. Held inside the State Capitol Building, presenting authors were able to talk about their books in places like the Senate Chamber, the House Chamber and the State Supreme Court room. Geared to promote literacy, festival authors visited several middle schools, junior highs and high schools to talk to students about writing and reading the day before the actual festival. Yates also attended a reception hosted by Governor Sam and Mary Brownback in the Governor's mansion along with the 30 other presenting authors.

Jessica James of Patriot Press is the first two-time winner of the coveted John Esten Cooke Award for Southern Fiction. She first won the award in 2011 for her Civil War novel Noble Cause, and received the 2014 award for her inspirational novel Above and Beyond in July. The award is presented annually to encourage writers of fiction to portray characters and events dealing with Southern history in a historically accurate fashion. Other John Esten Cooke Award winners include New York Times bestselling authors Donald McCaig, Robert Macomber, and Newt Gingrich. James was included in the book 50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading, published in 2010, and was a featured author at the Amelia Island Book Festival in Florida.

Charlotte E. Séré, author of The Stakes
IBPA member Charlotte E. Séré recently sold and signed copies of her self-published book The Stakes: Three Plays of the Black Experience to Heal, to Train, to Entertain at the DuSable Museum Festival of the Arts in Chicago. Séré's book features a collection of plays that address topics of timely interest including addiction, HIV, mental illness, racial injustice and sexual harassment. The Stakes serves as a guide to the use of drama as a support in healing, training and entertaining all.

Bess Taubman, author of My Pearl Harbor Scrapbook, recently returned from a book signing trip on the East Coast. The trip included book signings at 3 Smithsonian Museums: the Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American History, and the National Air and Space Museum at the Udvar-Hazy Center. Taubman says that the signings were "a joy and privilege" and that those present at the signings were "lovely" and "welcoming." My Pearl Harbor Scrapbook also received an honorable mention in the Indie Fab Book of the Year awards in the U.S. History/Young Adult category.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson recently updated the 2nd edition e-book of The Frugal Editor. This edition includes a section on ampersands, contains a Kindle-formatting tutorial and has already been praised by Dan Poynter's Global Ebook Awards and the Next Generation Indie Awards. Carolyn will be speaking at the Digital Author Indie Publishing Conference (10/17-10/19 in Van Nuys, CA) on the topics of “Digital Marketing Made Simple” and “Using Createspace as a one-stop shop for digital and paper." She will also be speaking at the Southern Utah Book Expo (10/25/14 in St. George, Utah); she will be signing copies of The Frugal Book Promoter as well as her poetry chapbooks.
