Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to Independent Publishing Now, IBPA's monthly e-newsletter that features the hottest news and information from IBPA members.

Can you believe it? In less than two weeks, we'll all be celebrating a brand new year! With 2016 just around the corner, IBPA would like to review all that’s happened in 2015 with you.

Earlier this year, IBPA’s Publishing University, held April 10-11 in Austin, attracted 280 independent publishers and self-published authors, a number that put the event at capacity. Our 27th annual conference was a huge success, and we are excited to share with you what we have in store for next year. View the Publishing University 2016 schedule here.

In May, Angela, Terry, and Mimi flew to the Big Apple to represent 409 unique titles at BookExpo/BookCon. 47 author signings took place inside the IBPA booth and nearly 200 members attended the convention using free or discounted badges provided by IBPA. If you’re interested in sending your book(s) to BEA/BookCon with IBPA next year, you can learn more here.

The next big trade show IBPA attended in 2015 was the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference. Angela and Mimi traveled to the conference to represent 198 individual member titles in our cooperative booth. We also hosted 31 author signings. Over the four exhibit days, IBPA staff scanned the badges of over 1,000 booth visitors and distributed over 200 catalogs!

…and before we knew it, summer came and went, with IBPA’s Board of Directors meeting on August 6-7 in California, and IBPA staff training during the ASAE Annual Meeting on August 8-11 in Michigan.

Last, but not least, IBPA sent Terry and Mimi to the Frankfurt Book Fair this past October. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean to represent 192 member titles, the staff onsite met with over 60 foreign rights agents and a handful of “trade” and “non-trade” visitors!

As this year comes to an end, IBPA would like to wish you happy holidays and a happy new year. We look forward to another wonderful year with you.

Now, on with the show! IBPA members can send notice of their accomplishments (TV appearances, special mentions, book signings, etc.) to mimi@ibpa-online.org. We look forward to featuring you in a future issue!

Sincerely,

Your IBPA Staff:
Angela Bole, Terry Nathan, Mimi Le, and Patti Grasso

From left to right: The Radical Housewife author Shannon Drury, Hillary Clinton, Drury's friend Erin Matson, and Sen. Al Franken.
USABookNews.com, the premier online magazine featuring mainstream and independent publishing houses, announced the winners and finalists of The 2015 USA Best Books Awards on November 16, 2015 and The Radical Housewife by Shannon Drury of Medusa's Muse Press won first prize in the Women’s Issues Category. Inspired by her award-winning blog of the same name, Drury’s book The Radical Housewife: Redefining Family Values for the 21st Century proves that feminism isn’t the threat to “family values” that conservative pundits might think—in fact, it’s the ideal framework for raising children in an increasingly complex world.

Fast Freddy and What A Bragger! award-winning author Lee Ann Mancini.
Last month, Lee Ann Mancini took home Readers’ Favorite Finalist: Children’s Books K-3rd and Readers’ Favorite Illustration Award Winner: Children’s Books K-3rd for not one title but two titles! Both books, Fast Freddy and What A Bragger!, have won eight awards in the last eight months! Furthermore, LIfeWay Christian bookstores placed an order for 330 hard copies of each book for the holiday season. This year has definitely been remarkable for Mancini, an adjunct Professor at South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary, who founded GLM Publishing last year.

The Children of Wind Dance Farm holding up their title, Saving Annie’s Mountain (Publisher: Cold Run Books).
The Midwest Book Review recently gave The Children of Wind Dance Farm's book Saving Annie’s Mountain two thumbs up in their "Picturebook Shelf" and "Lorraine’s Bookshelf" category. The book’s illustrator, O’Ryan, kicked off a series of events with an appearance at the Pittsburgh Zine Fair in October. Later in the month, the writers signed books at the Winchester Book Gallery in Winchester, Virginia. They also appeared at The Berkeley Springs Book Festival (W.Va.) in November and, in December, spoke on the subject of “young writers writing for young readers” at Four Seasons Books in Shepherdstown, W. Va.

The book cover for Commune by Java Davis.
Commune by Java Davis was recently awarded the New Apple Literary Summer 2015 top honors in the Humor category. The book focuses on an apple commune and the disparate group of stragglers who end up there. Davis' books have garnered three 5-Star Medallions from Readers' Favorite. Java Davis, a self-published author, spent fifteen years in the printing and marketing fields. After retiring early due to a disability, she turned to writing books as a way to work at home. A perpetual wanderer earlier in life, she draws heavily on a lifetime of diverse locales, unusual experiences and varied friendships.

Cent'Anni: The Sinatra Legend at 100 author Richard Muti.
Richard Muti sure has had a busy month! He's been interviewed by three television shows so far and three radio programs. On Sunday (12/13), Muti was on New Jersey Now with Jim McQueeny on Channel 9 (WOR-TV). His book, Cent'Anni: The Sinatra Legend at 100, did so well at Bookends Bookstore in Ridgewood, New Jersey on November 8th (more than 100 folks showed up for the book launch and 135 books were sold) that the management invited Muti back on December 12. Furthermore, USA Book News has named Cent'Anni: The Sinatra Legend at 100 an Award Finalist in the biography category of its 2015 Best Book competition.

Susan Horton and her book From Green Fields to Blue Collars was the subject of the above article in The Defiance Crescent News (click photo to enlarge).
On November 15, 2015, The Defiance Crescent News published a wonderful and informative piece on Susan Horton and her book From Green Fields to Blue Collars. The article examines Horton's life (she spent her first 23 years in Defiance "where she worked after high school graduation as secretary to [the] DHS principal") and why she wrote her sixth book ("...[it] grew out of out of a series of questions"). The book has been nominated for two national awards: The prestigious Eric Hoffer Award and the IPPY.

Kenneth Zak holding up his bestseller book, The Poet's Secret (Publisher: Penju Publishing / October 2015).
Kenneth Zak's debut novel, The Poet's Secret, was declared "a lyrical tour de force" by Foreword Reviews and has already broken into the top 100 in Amazon's Action Adventure Romance category. Zak was featured on Frommer's The Travel Show (radio) discussing Greece and particularly the island of Crete, where the The Poet's Secret (an RWA Golden Heart Finalist in Romantic Suspense) was conceived while Zak was on a 3 year personal pilgrimage traveling, writing, surfing, swimming, and free diving. His article The Blue Life of An Aquatic Nomad was featured in the September 2015 issue of Luxe Beat Magazine.

Mikel Miller of Egret Books holding up two Benjamin Franklin Digital Award certificates.
Egret Books was recently awarded not one but two Benjamin Franklin Digital Awards for their two books, Mexico: Sunlight & Shadows: Short Stories & Essays by Mexico Writers and In the Time of Jacarandas. In the Time of Jacarandas, written by Michael Hogan, was the recipient of the Silver Award and Mexico, a novel co-written by 22 authors including managing editor Mikel Miller, received the Gold Award. Both titles are recognized for exceptional content, design, and use of technology.
