Dear IBPA,

Welcome to Independent Publishing Now, IBPA's monthly e-newsletter that features the hottest news and information from IBPA members.

Much of the focus in our office this month has centered on the importance of education within the IBPA community. With Publishing University quickly approaching and other exciting educational programs underway, February has been spent reflecting on the importance of publishing education within our members' lives. We hope to see you at Publishing University and look forward to your participation in our other educational opportunities

Deadline to be considered for inclusion in PW's annual report on fast-growing, small publishers is 02/20/15.
Publishers Weekly is collecting information for their annual report on fast-growing, small publishers. The feature, Fast-Growing Small Publishers, will run in PW's March 9th issue. To be considered for inclusion, small presses with annual net sales of $2 million–$10 million should submit (1) net sales figures for 2012–2014, (2) the number of employees in those years, (3) the number of new titles released, and (4) a brief description of the reasons for sales growth.

Stone Bridge Press' The Anime Encyclopedia.
Stone Bridge Press, owned by Peter Goodman, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year and will be completing one of their biggest publications of all time: The Anime Encyclopedia. Stone Bridge was established in Berkeley, CA, in 1989 and now has 150 titles in print, covering such Japan-related areas as language, business, literature, manga, design, and culture. The indie press believes that Japan offers tremendous opportunities for re-examining Western values and for connecting with an emerging global culture increasingly centered on the Pacific Rim. Awards received by the indie press include the PEN West award for literature, the Japan-America Friendship Commission Prize from Columbia University, the HOW International Award, the International Typographic Design Award, the AIGA award for design, and the Benjamin Franklin Award for editorial and design excellence.

Abayomi, the Brazilian Puma: The True Story of an Orphaned Cub has just been named a 2015 Outstanding Science Trade Book by the National Science Teacher’s Association. Written by children’s book author Darcy Pattison and illustrated by Kitty Harvill, the book chronicles the life of Abayomi, an orphaned, Brazilian puma that was rescued after 23 days on his own. Darcy and Kitty's previous book, Wisdom, the Midway Albatross, was published in 2012 and received a starred review in Publisher's Weekly and was awarded the Writer’s Digest Self-Published Award for Children’s Books in 2013. Darcy expressed, “We think Abayomi’s story illustrates some of the key environmental issues today. And it does so within a heart-warming story that kids can relate to.” Abayomi, the Brazilian Puma is available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble.

Why Not Books' youngest author, 14-year old Luke Herzog, has just published his second book, Griffin Blade and the Bronze Finger. Herzog's fantasy novel tells the story of a kind-hearted thief and his traveling band of misfit companions who pursue a lost gem and find themselves at the center of an epic battle for power in the world of Alastian. Why Not Books hosted a launch party for Griffin Blade at Bookworks in Pacific Grove, CA where Herzog was interviewed for an article in the Monterey Herald. Time For Kids ran a feature on Herzog in September 2012 that focused on the author's first title, Dragon Valley. Herzog receives a steady flow of emails from children around the country who enjoyed and were inspired by Dragon Valley. Aimed at middle grade to young adult readers, Griffin Blade is available on Amazon and most e-book platforms.

Robyn Webb's Amazon best-seller The Paris Vacation Apartment Guide: Rent with Confidence -- Learn Where to Stay Without Getting Overwhelmed, Ripped-Off or Scammed! was recently featured in a Time Square promo and awarded a Benjamin Franklin Digital Award. The book offers "a very personal insider's guide to a side of Paris rarely experienced within the confines of a hotel." Robyn is an award-winning cookbook author, nutritionist, culinary instructor, Food Editor of Diabetes Forecast Magazine and recipient of the prestigious US President’s Council on Fitness’ Healthy American Fitness Leader Award. Commenting on the creation of the book, Robyn expressed, "I was scared but curious about renting a Paris vacation apartment, and outside of a few articles, I had nowhere and no one to turn to for advice. I really wrote this book for me and I am so pleased to share it with other Parisophiles!"

Tamara L. Dever's TLC Graphics recently designed and produced I Won't Take the Mark, a children's book by Dr. Katherine Albrecht about the Book of Revelation. The book was officially released by Dr. Albrecht, TLC Graphics, and a special team via a mission trip to Anguilla. The team made presentations and gave away 3,700 copies of the book to Anguillian school children. The visit sparked Anguilla's launch of Christian Heritage Week, which will now be an annual event. Tamara commented that the trip was an example of an "author's book becoming far bigger than the book itself."

Steve Snyder's SHOT DOWN recently received Honorable Mention at the 2014 Southern California Book Festival and was a Finalist in the 2014 USA Best Book Awards. Shot Down tells the story of the B-17 Susan Ruth, a WWII plane that was piloted by Snyder's father, Howard, and was shot down over the French/Belgium border after a mission to bomb Frankfurt. Steve has connected with amazing people throughout the creation of Shot Down, ranging from the German Luftwaffe pilot, Hans Berger, who shot down his father's plane, to U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, Denise Bauer. Steve was also recently featured on a segment for WTOC 11 news that covered Super Museum Sunday in Savannah, Georgia. The clip shows Steve signing copies of Shot Down at the National Museum of the Eight Air Force.

Hank Quense gives out a book to a lucky winner at a Write Group event.
Hank Quense of Strange Worlds Publishing recently released the Montclair Write Group Sampler 2014, a collection of published works from 33 members of the Montclair Write Group. The ebook contains fiction, essays, memoirs, poetry and a play and took less than six months to produce. The project was headed by Quense, who acted as team leader, mentor, and publisher. Quense also had the help of about a dozen other members who handled submissions and copy editing. The Sampler was published with two main objectives in mind: to demonstrate the Write Group's breadth of talent and to let participants experience the world of publishing. The Montclair Write Group Sampler 2014 is available as a free download on Smashwords, Kobo and other ebook retailers.

Local Lessons Publishing has announced the release of Catie & Maura's Giant Adventure, conceptualized and written by 4-year old Sabrina Bendo. Sabrina conjured the story each morning at her kitchen table over the course of a year, with her mother, Bridget, capturing the story in words. Sabrina and Bridget hope that the title will fill the demand in children's books for silliness, fancy, and diverse characters. One Amazon reviewer praised the book, calling it "a beautiful story of fun, excitement and play" that "teaches children that people who look different like the same things, do the same activities and desire to have friends...". Catie & Maura's Giant Adventure is available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble.

Jeffrey B. Miller’s Behind the Lines has earned a Kirkus Star Review and is now included in Kirkus’ Best Books of 2014. The title has also received positive reviews from Publishers Weekly, Foreword, and the Denver Post. Behind the Lines is a nonfiction title that follows Commission for Relief (CRB) delegates who fought the German occupation during WWI. In October, Miller was invited by the Belgian Ambassador to the Belgian residence in Washington, D.C. for an event honoring the 100th year anniversary of the CRB, an international organization that arranged for the supply of food to German-occupied Belgium and northern France during WWI.

Christine Horner of In the Garden Publishing has sold the Russian translation rights for The Fire & Mystery of Awareness by Burt Harding. The offer immediately followed the book's 2014 release date and came from a benefactor of the author working to spread the author’s message in the East. This will be Harding's second translated title. The final book in Harding's "awakening trilogy," The Fire & Mystery of Awareness focuses on "awakening to the Presence you are and always have been." In the Garden Publishing is dedicated to the advancement of human consciousness and creating a conscious community.

Paul Singh's Discovering Our World: Humanity's Epic Journey from Myth to Knowledge will be released on April 1st and distributed by Independent Publishers Group. Written by Singh and co-author John R. Shook, the book seeks to answer an important question: where did everything come from? Drawing on the latest findings from the physical and biological sciences, astronomy and cosmology, geology and genetics, and prehistory and archeology, Discovering Our World reveals the answers science gives about ourselves and the universe in which we live.

Synergetic Press has released The Anthropocene: The Human Era and How It Shapes Our Planet by environmental journalist Christian Schwägerl. The Anthropocene investigates our current ecological circumstances and reveals that we possess the scientific, philosophical, spiritual and governmental tools needed to correct our current trajectory towards a positive and sustainable future.
