Happy New Year! 2014 was a year filled with change, challenges, and triumphs within the world of publishing. Though the industry was faced with many uncertainties, one thing that remained consistent throughout 2014 was the perseverance and diligence of IBPA members. We have no doubt that 2015 will present our members with countless achievements; we can't wait to support and cheer you on along your journey to success.

Jeanne Roppolo, author of the Grandma Goes to… series, was recently interviewed by Illinois Channel Executive Director Terrence Martin. This exciting interview took place at the Annual Library Conference in Springfield, IL where Jeanne was one of 40 authors invited to showcase her books. Jeanne does many speaking engagements with libraries and was nominated to attend the conference by 3, different libraries. Jeanne recently wrote her first memoir, SURREAL: Reflections on Ice: An Epiphany of Understanding, which is the "true story of a 57-year-old grandmother who reclaims her soul and passion for life while experiencing the bizarre culture and exotic adventures of living and working at McMurdo Station, Antarctica."

Digging Deep author Fran Sorin.
The 10th Anniversary Edition of Fran Sorin's Digging Deep: Unearthing Your Creative Roots Through Gardening was published in October 2014 by Braided Worlds Publishing. Digging Deep is a #1 bestseller in Gardening and Horticulture Essays. The updated edition has a new foreword written by Larry Dossey, M.D. and "endorsements from renowned spiritual, gardening, and mind-body authors including Andrew Weil, M.D., Reverend Michael Beckwith, Guy Finley, Amy Stewart, and several more."

The Clever Mill Horse author Jodi Lew-Smith.
Jodi Lew-Smith was recently declared the first place winner of the James River Writers' Inaugural Self-published Novel Contest for her book The Clever Mill Horse. The award recognizes the writing talents and entrepreneurial skills of indie authors. Contest chair Erica Orloff and head judge April Eberhardt selected Jodi, as well as two finalists, from forty entries that were judged on writing quality, editing, layout, design, and formatting. Jodi lives in Vermont with her "patient husband, three wonderfully impatient children, a bevy of pets and farm animals, and 250 exceedingly patient apple trees which, if they could talk, would suggest that she stop writing and start pruning. Luckily they’re pretty quiet."

Stuck author Stacey D. Atkinson.
Stacey D. Atkinson recently received Honorable Mention in the Mainstream/Literary Fiction category of the 22nd Annual Writer’s Digest’s Self-Published Book Awards for her novel Stuck. Stacey published Stuck through her company, Mirror Image Publishing, which also offers editing and writing services. Out of a staggering 2,700 entries, the program's judges ranked Stuck as "a wonderful novel that will appeal to adults and young adult readers." Stuck was also a Silver Winner at the 2014 Benjamin Franklin Book Awards and was awarded an IndieReader Approved designation.

Merge Publishing author Marci Diehl.
Merge Publishing's Marci Diehl had a book launch and author signing for her debut novel, What You Don't Know Now, in October 2014. Marci has been as an essayist, feature writer and editor for national and regional magazines for 30 years. She is the associate editor and head writer for Canandaigua Magazine in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. Diehl's novel is a coming of age, new adult novel inspired by actual events that Diehl recorded in a travel log notebook in Europe during the 1960s. The book is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, Kobo, and Merge Publishing.

Smile & Succeed for Teens author Kirt Manecke.
Kirt Manecke's new book Smile & Succeed for Teens: Must-Know People Skills for Today’s Wired World recently won the prestigious Mom’s Choice Gold Award honoring excellence in family-friendly media, products, and services. Smile & Succeed for Teens is a crash course in face-to-face communication to ensure teens succeed in school, work and life. Metro Parent Magazine praised Kirt's book, calling it, “A direct, helpful guide without wasted words or time,” and author John Spence called it, "An absolutely fantastic book, full of good, solid, fundamental ideas and recommendations that every teen should take some time to read."

Author and publisher Rochelle Carter's The 7-Step Guide to Authorpreneurship was recently declared an Award-Winner in the Business: Writing & Publishing category of the 2014 USA Best Book Awards. This follows being named the 2014 Entrepreneur of the Year (Creative Arts & Media) in the Stiletto Woman in Business Awards by Stiletto Thrive, a FORBES recognized organization for women entrepreneurs.

Ellechor Publishing author Michele Chynoweth’s first novel, The Faithful One, has won the 2014 Readers Favorite International Book Award Contest Silver Medal for Inspirational Fiction. It was one of ten titles selected among the thousands of entries to be considered for evaluation by Wind Dancer Films for movie production. Commenting on the award, Michele expressed, “Winning the Readers Favorite International Book Award Contest was a fantastic experience…from meeting many other award-winning authors to getting lots of recognition and exposure for my books, I feel honored to be counted among the “chosen” and hope to leverage this momentum to keep striving toward my goals as an author..."

Demiurge author Michael Hagan.
Bookkus Publishing recently announced the publication of a new title: Demiurge: Blood of the Innocent. Demiruge is the second Bookkus title chosen by a community of reviewers in order to guarantee the publication of community-powered and community-approved titles. Written by Michael Hagan, the novel is a murder mystery full of prophecies, corruption, and collusion. Bookkus publishing is a "creative trade publisher that uses a group of reviewers to help choose which books readers find the most interesting and entertaining. Bookkus believes that readers are interested in a wide variety of both challenging and entertaining narratives, told in unique styles and from a variety of perspectives."

Author Sherry L. Meinberg was recently featured in the Long Beach Press Telegram to celebrate her one hundredth award! The publication praised Sherry for her latest nonfiction book, The Cockroach Invasion, commenting, "Kudos to [Sherry] for tackling unusual and difficult subject matter, in creative and humorous ways, while providing amazing facts to shock and delight readers. Her goal for each book has always been to raise public awareness. Cheers! Bravo! Applause!" The Cockroach Invasion was inspired by an incident that occurred in Sherry's third grade classroom years ago and features sketches drawn by students. Sherry says that the underlying message of the book is "self-sufficiency, open-mindedness, and respect for other living creatures."
