Chairman Updates:

  • Carmen Wilson has been hired as the new Alliance program director. She will begin in late November, and we will release more information at that time! Here are a few tidbits about Carmen:
    • She spent 8 years at Providence Hospitals working on population health initiatives
    • Her clinical background is in exercise physiology
    • She has her MHA from MUSC
    • Her BS is in Exercise and Sports Science from USC
    • Other involvements include serving on the board of directors for Columbia's YMCA and serving on the SC Mission Leadership Team 2011, 2012, and 2014
  • Dues invoices will be sent out in November. Please remember to put "Alliance for a Healthier SC" in the memo section of your check. Thank you to all members who generously paid more than their $2,000 dues!

Member Updates

  • Teresa Arnold, AARP, Communications Team Chair: In an effort to improve communications between Alliance teams, Brooke Bailey from DHHS will serve as a liaison between the Communications Team and the Health Equity Team, and Bett Williams from Children’s Trust of South Carolina will serve as a liaison between the Communications Team and the Policy and Advocacy Team. The Communications Team is also currently working on a communications plan for the open enrollment period. 
  • Rick Foster, Catalyst for Health, Operations Team Chair: As of September 26, the Operations team will be known as the Alignment team. At the inception of the Alliance, there was a need for a team to manage Alliance Operations. That need no longer exists, and the members of the team has opted to focus their efforts on alignment. A continued desire from Alliance members has been to more closely align with not only Alliance goals, but also other members’ goals.
  • Bruce Snyder, SC Medical Association, Alliance Chair: Congratulations to Dr. Rick Foster, who was recently published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons
  • Melissa Watson, SC Thrive: As open enrollment began November 1st, Melissa shared some up SC Thrive's latest projects. Learn more here
  • Meka Sales, The Duke Endowment: Healthy People Healthy Carolinas will be launching soon. The Request for Proposals will be available in the Alliance newsletter as soon as it is released!
  • Christine Turley, Health Sciences SC: The National Institute of Health has awarded a four-year, $1.6 million dollar grant to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine to establish a statewide Pediatric Clinical Trials Network. The Medical University of South Carolina and Health Sciences South Carolina will join the USC School of Medicine in leading the network. 
  • Mary Piepenbring, The Duke Endowment: Mary Piepenbring from The Duke Endowment announced her retirement. Lin Hollowell has been named the new Healthcare Director. 
Health In All Policies Goals

With help from the Communications Team, the Policy and Advocacy Team has been working hard to clarify and structure the Health in All Policies Goals that members decided were most important to them at the July 2016 meeting. You can view the goals below and also at this link

Tim Ervolina, John Miller, Sabra Slaughter, and Bob Toomey are the first members of the Alliance for a Healthier SC Ambassadors Team. Tim gave a quick introduction at the meeting and welcomed other retirees or soon-to-be-retirees to join their group. The Alliance Ambassadors will advise and assist the Alliance and invest their wealth of contacts and experience to improve the Alliance in ways that align with our goals.

The Alliance for a Healthier South Carolina is an unprecedented volunteer collaboration of more than 50 diverse organizations across the state working together on coordinating action to achieve healthier bodies, minds and communities for ALL—while reducing the future cost of care. Through the collective efforts of its members and other strong state and community coalitions, the Alliance is working toward the day when South Carolina leads the nation in the continuous improvement of health and healthcare for ALL people in the state.
