G. Paul Hendrickson, General Manager
Editorial Musings
"Watch Your Language"
by Sean McDonough, Editorial Advisor

As the newest member of Hendrickson’s editorial team, I’ve found that clarity in writing is very important.  I am very much indebted to the British philosopher J. L. Austin for pointing out that ordinary words serve perfectly well to capture most of the distinctions that need to be made in our lives. If you cannot say something plainly, the odds are it is because you do not really know what you want to say. Jargon gets in the way of clear thought, which in turn makes clear communication impossible. I leave you with the wise words of Luis Alonso Schöckel (Manual of Hermeneutics, p.171): “Clarity is charity for the reader.”
Reference Book-of-the-Month
The Tosefta (2-volume set)
Translated from the Hebrew with a new Introduction

The importance of the Tosefta for literary, historical, and religious scholarship has long been known, and this two-volume set makes it accessible to many more readers.

This English translation of the Mishnaic Hebrew (with some Aramaic) aims at a literal rendition into English of the formulary patterns and syntactical traits of the original text. References to the passages in the Tosefta, that cite verbatim the corresponding unit in the Mishnah, are printed in italics.

More About Hendrickson Publishers

Founded in 1979, Hendrickson Publishers is located on Boston's North Shore. We find the Jewish and Christian Scriptures to be entirely worthy of the more than two millennia of study by scholars from different religious backgrounds. For that reason we seek to produce outstanding resources in the fields of Biblical studies, theology, and language reference for the church, the academy, and the general public.

Our books ideally will be opened again and again as resources for plumbing the depths of the languages, cultures, theologies, religions, and histories of the world of the Bible.

“Bibles, Bible reference works, and titles supporting the field of biblical studies are our focus.” - Rick Brown, Publisher
“We seek to publish books that advance the field of biblical studies directly as well as those that support the study of the Bible by scholars of every level from the informed laity to the advanced scholar.” - Allan Emery, Senior Editor
