What is RefugeesWellSchool (RWS)?
RWS is a Horizon2020 research project that develops, implements and evaluates school-based preventive interventions promoting mental and social wellbeing among migrant and refugee adolescents. We are seven universities located in six countries: UGent and KULeuven (Belgium), University of Copenhagen (Denmark), University of Tampere (Finland), NKVTS (Norway), University of Uppsala (Sweden), and University of Sussex (UK). Our project aims to provide evidence-base on what interventions work and why, and how they can be implemented in different educational settings. In doing so, we collaborate with schools and teachers, our national and European stakeholders, and our partners the Augeo Foundation, CASNAV, ICPI, and Pharos.
What interventions?
We implemented five different school-based interventions: Classroom Drama, Welcome to School, PIER intervention, INSETT In-service teacher training, and Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT) with INSETT. All these programmes aim at promoting social and mental wellbeing among migrant and refugee youth. Even though different, these interventions are all anchored in focusing on social networks and social support. They altogether aimed to result in increased overall mental health, resilience, academic achievement and positive social networks and relationships. By now, all the interventions have been implemented and we are currently analysing the outcomes of the interventions.
Where are we in the project?
Despite the challenges brought on by COVID-19, by now all the interventions have been implemented, each intervention at least in two countries. We asked adolescents, teachers and parents before and after the interventions about several aspects of their psychosocial wellbeing and their experiences with the RWS interventions in a quest to know how the interventions improved mental health, social networks and social support, as well as teachers' competences and teacher-parent collaborations. Since November 2020, we have been managing and analysing the crossnational quantitative and qualitative data in order to know more about the effectiveness of the interventions. We are very happy and proud of our Effectiveness Report! We will share it with you very soon!
Events, workshops, conferences
Relationships with schools are very important for us. The Belgian team organised several meetings with participating schools to keep in touch. Read more here.

The RWS teams kept on being busy spreading the word of the project and talk about our findings so far. Check out where we appeared and what we talked about here. Contact us, if you are interested in knowing more about these presentations!
BA and MA students worked very hard in Finland in analysing, presenting and writing about RWS specifically in Finland. Read about their great work here.
We are very happy to announce that RWS published some more results! We have some important findings on:
What's next?
  • We are currently designing the RWS 'Models', a tool that will help policy makers and school leaders to decide which intervention would fit them the best.
  • We will organise national and European stakeholder meetings and workshops to school practitioners and policy makers. We will share what we found in RWS and will listen to others to know what we could do better!
  • We will share the Effectiveness Report, and some more resources (e.g. intervention manuals, implementation protocols) with you! Stay tuned!
