Welcome to Flama Flama Flama Diddle.

This is the first newsletter I have done for quite a long time but I am now going to make it, at least, monthly. If you have anything you want to ask me or for me to include in the Newsletter then just let me know.
WHAT I’M PRACTICING
THE DRUMMERS COMPLETE VOCABULARY.
As taught by by Alan Dawson. By John Ramsay
I’ve been using this book for a good few years and it’s always great to work from.
Learn the rudiments.
If you don't know the book there’s a section called “the rudimental ritual”, it’s about 16 pages long but it’s good to just do a page at a time. Recommended.

DEVELOPING MELODIC LANGUAGE ON THE DRUMS.
By Wayne Satzmann
Play-along tracks that are excellent. Loads of background and information leading to the play-along’s.
Connect to the song and fellow musicians while playing to original tracks covering various genres. Great!

CISSY STRUT by THE METERS.
Zigaboo Modeliste on drums.
A song with from 1967 with drumming that was ground-breaking at the time and is still as original as ever and a challenging style to play. Linear drumming at its best. Try it.

THE ART OF BOP DRUMMING.
By John Riley.
A must have a book for any drummer who is into their jazz.  This is “the place” to start. Lots of information and exercises and great play-along’s as well.

MOVIES I'VE WATCHED RECENTLY
GREEN BOOK. Amidst rampant racism in the 1960s southern America, an African American pianist hires an Italian American bouncer to drive him through his venues. They come closer in the course of their journey. Based on a true story. Great!

MA RAINEYS BLACK BOTTOM. Tensions rise when trailblazing blues singer Ma Rainey and her band gather at a recording studio in Chicago in 1927. Starring the late Chadwick Boseman. Again based on a true story and adapted from a stage play.

MANK. 1930s Hollywood is re-evaluated through the eyes of scathing wit and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish "Citizen Kane.” Gary Oldman is great in this.
WHAT I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO
BRIAN BLADE - FELLOWSHIP. 1998 studio album from one of the great modern American jazz drummers and session players. An impressive debut album with a blend of genres.

AMERICAN SONGBOOK. I’ve been catching up on a lot of the American classics from a wide variety of artists. Great swinging songs and plenty of brush work to enjoy.

THE GIL EVANS ORCHESTRA - OUT OF THE COOL. Elvin Jones on drums. What’s not to like. After Miles Davis “kind of blue” album this is probably my second favourite. The whole album works from beginning to end. Dynamic, exhilarating and just a joy to listen to.  Elvin is in mighty fine form as well.
