Welcome to FFFD 108

I've just spent a few days in Northamptonshire. A little town called Rushden to be precise. It's the home of JAZZ SCHOOL UK. Housed in an old shoe factory this is the epicentre of Jazz learning in the UK.

Over the course of the last weekend in June Jazz School Uk runs a Big Band jazz weekend. The guy leading the weekend is Steve Waterman, one of the best jazz trumpet players around. Steve composes and arranges so the weekend comprises the playing of some jazz standards, arranged by Steve, and some of Steve's own compositions. It's bloody hard work but at the same time extremely rewarding and a very satisfying experience.

WHAT I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING RECENTLY

The Beat Matrix by Mark Colenberg.

I first saw Mark playing a few years ago at The Band On The Wall venue in Manchester. He was playing with piano player Robert Glasper. Mark's playing was fantastic so when he brought this book out I didn't hesitate in buying it. Mark comes from a jazz, hip hop background and probably a whole load more influences in music as well but in this book you get the hip hop influence in his style. Recommended!

I recently had a flying visit to Fontainebleu in France and I've been reading up on the history of this incredible chateau.

The one and only "Papa" Jo Jones. If you don't know of him you should. Check out his recordings, google him and find out more. The album pictured here is full of incredible interviews with Jo. Go on ...treat yourself!

16's clockwise around the kit. Note the stickings. Always going hand to hand with no crossover. Go slowly to start with and get the sticking right first before trying to play it fast.
