A FEW THINGS I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY
|
|
|
FROM 1973. Herbie Hancock's HEADHUNTERS album. A Jazz Funk classic with the wonderful Harvey Mason on drums. Herbie was inspired by what Miles Davis and artists like Sly Stone and James Brown were doing. He took the Funk and the new technology of synthesiser's and made this seminal record.

"Papa" Jo Jones. A phenomenal drummer. One of the all time greats. a major influence on later drummers such as Buddy Rich, Kenny Clarke, Roy Haynes, Max Roach and Louis Bellson. Count Basie's drummer from 1934 to 1948. A magician with brushes as well as sticks and some amazing footage available with Jo playing the drum set with his hands.

A must read for any drummer who wants to understand how rock drumming got to where it is today. There is so much information in this book and references to classic songs and the development of rock drums. I was so inspired by it that I compiled a thirteen and a half hour playlist on Spotify of every song named in the book.
Check it out.

A book that was originally published in 1965. The result of a collaboration between human rights activist Malcolm X and journalist Alex Haley. Based on a series of in-depth interviews conducted between 1963 and Malcolm X's 1965 assassination.
A New York Times reviewer described it as a "brilliant, painful, important book".
Malcolm X was assassinated in New York in February 1965,
A book that is still very much as relevant today as it was in 1965.
