Dear Urban ArtWorks Community,
Black voices, Black expression, Black creativity, Black joy, and Black dreams are imperative for humanity’s progress. We stand in solidarity with those who continue to fight for this basic recognition.
We are strongest when we embrace the creativity and diversity of the community we serve and believe that our deep commitment to cultural and racial equity is an investment in our mission and shared future.
We are committed to fighting for racial justice for the young people and communities we serve by:
  • Continually examining and intentionally undoing our own internalized and institutional behaviors that have reinforced the systemic racism that exists within our society;
  • Maintaining a safe space where young people of color can learn, thrive, be creative, make mistakes, and grow;
  • Designing programs where black and brown voices are centered, honored, protected, amplified and loved.
In November 2019, we began a strategic planning process informed by our youth participants, staff, and board of directors. As a predominantly white-led organization, we recognized the urgency and opportunity to develop every stage of our plan with an anti-racist lens. As we continue to develop our strategic plan in the coming months, one way we will hold ourselves accountable is by sharing our goals, strategies, and outcomes with you.
