It’s raining cicada-eggs, hallelujah! 

While the cicadas are clearing, eggs Brood X laid into tree branches remain. And in a few short weeks (late July-August), hatching eggs will rain down nymphs that will burrow into the ground until 2038. A single female cicada can lay up to 500 eggs, and considering the number of cicadas we saw, the periodical cicadas are here to stay (burrowed).

Sidewalk studies

In June’s 25 community-led “Sidewalk Palooza” events, (ironically named after the Mayor’s annual car-centric Pothole Palooza) people documented 385 cases of unsafe pedestrian infrastructure—many of which have been languishing on the city’s to-do list for years. Missing curb cuts force seniors in wheelchairs into the road, uneven sidewalks send runners tumbling, and more!

The heat index is expected to reach 105 in parts of the city, another in a run of too-hot-to-do-anything days defining July 2021 so far.
