“Prepare to participate”

Smithsonian Anacostia Museum curator Samir Meghelli remembers Martin Luther King, Jr.’s grand 1967 parade through Shaw, supporting a call for inclusive urban development “with, by, and for the people who live there.”

Not just MLK

The day is named for one man, but the civil rights movement was defined by its multiplicity of heroes. One of those, J. Charles Jones, just died, almost 80 years after walking the length of the Beltway to protest housing segregation. The Freedom Rider also organized sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in Charlotte.

Archives remembers not to forget

The National Archives blurred anti-Trump language from several photos used in promotional materials for a Women’s March promotion, prompting stern backlash and a quick apology.
