Wake to Washington

Cool as the other side of the pillow

Brewing ideas

DC beer and cidermakers are innovating new ways of selling inventory and collaborating with other businesses up and down the coast. To give you a taste: 3 Stars is offering a three-tiered CSB (Community Supported Beer) program; ANXO has added meat, baguettes and seafood to their provisions (including Maine mussels); Hellbender debuted a popular purple rice saison in collaboration with Black Narrows Brewing and USA Rice.

Who wins Ward 2?

There are a half-dozen viable candidates in Ward 2, and lots of undecided voters. It’s a crowded enough field that the Post clamored for ranked-choice voting to separate out voter preferences.

What it’s like in Maryland and Virginia

While stay-at-home orders are still in effect for DC and its surrounding suburbs like PG County and all of Northern Virginia, businesses in some parts of Maryland and Virginia re-opened this past weekend. But as predicted, it’s not a light switch flip back to normal - restaurant capacity will be limited and restricted to outdoor seating only, and patrons at hair salons and retail stores are encouraged to continue wearing masks

We don’t have to go back to "normal."

Helping returning citizens

Nearly 70% of the formerly incarcerated are sent back to prison within 3 years. New DC non-profit Thinking for a Change is trying to step into the gaps left by a broken system with a rehabilitation program featuring training and behavioral therapy.

BYT Presents: International Museum Day

BYT is continuing their reign on IG Live programming, this time with International Museum Day, where cultural institutions in DC, New York, and Boston are taking over to give live talks. Participating museums include NGA, Hirshhorn, Mass Art Art Museum, Glenstone, and more. (10am-7pm)

Beat your face like Ariel

Doing makeup in quarantine can feel unnecessary—unless it’s underwater mermaid makeup, in which case it is an absolutely necessary creative outlet. Regardless of experience level, gender, or style, the Society of Fat Mermaids is ready to teach you a fishy (literally) look that will survive several hours beneath the waves. (8:30pm)

Help improve the city's byways

  • Possibly the worst (best?) intersection in the world, New York + Florida Ave NE, AKA Dave Thomas Circle, is finally getting its much-ballyhooed some point. But they’re planning for the public space around it, and you’re invited to give feedback on what you’d like to see! (Somehow, it will probably end up being an even bigger Wendy’s.) (7pm)

  • WABA wants feedback on dangerous intersections and corridors in Wards 4, 7 and 8. Check which Ward you live in here.
