A fantasy journey through zoning hell

Thought experiment: If all of the residential land in DC were zoned ‘R-1-B’, or single-family on small/medium-sized detached lots, things would get weird. Ward 1 and 2 would only have 10,000 homes (for ~70k residents). Wards 3 and 4 would be...upzoned, somehow? Limiting housing density in cities is bad for the climate and makes living here more expensive.

Enabling more car trips = not great for environment

Taking an Uber or Lyft pollutes 69% more than the transportation modes they claim to replace, as folks often use it to replace what would have been a more sustainable trip (bus, bike, walk, scooter, etc). But the companies also admit that 40% of driving time consists of empty vehicles looking for riders

I’m just a renter, standing in front of a real estate broker, asking them for my TOPA rights

Love Dot Com is a new rom-com on Netflix set in DC, and it’s very....of our time. It’s “a You’ve Got Mail-esque love story between Shelby and Greg, a partner at the real estate firm that buys Shelby’s apartment building with plans to flip it into condos.” Mayor Bowser’s brother makes a cameo.

The scooter war is coming

Come April 1, these are the scooter companies that will remain in the city: Jump, Lyft, Skip, and Spin. Bird, Lime, Bolt, and Razor will say goodbye. The 4 companies that DDOT decided on will  now be able to scale up significantly, putting 2,500 scooters in the streets per company. Currently, they each have less than 1,000.
