Wake to Washington

The test is

Sawdust rugs and Mexican folk dance performances?

Find La Catrina at the Día de los Muertos festival at the National Museum of the American Indian, perhaps dancing with jaguars, emerging from a sawdust carpet or posing with visitors for photos.

National Champions

In case you didn’t hear the beeps, fireworks, or yells, be it known that the Washington Nationals are World Series victors, ringing up the second title of the fall (WNBA) and the third belt currently held (with NHL). A strong start by Max Scherzer, another round of big hits by Tony Rendon and Juan Soto, and we are the champions. (We told you they could be good!)

Jefferson’s makeover levels up

Local billionaire David Rubenstein, whose major donations include Smithsonian institutions, National Parks, and the Kennedy Center, is donating $10 million to renovate the museum space underneath the Jefferson Memorial (TIL that exists!). The project is slated to finish by the memorial’s 80th anniversary in 2023. The restoration work on the dome to remove the black ~biofilm~ is still on track to be finished by next April.

Are you there, God? It’s us, Whole Foods

It’s been two years since the Glover Park Whole Foods shut down due to a rodent infestation, but the court battle is at a stalemate between the grocery chain and the owner of the building, Wical Limited, who refuses to sign off on construction in the space. Each side is claiming the other violated the lease agreement, and now the court must decide on the linchpin clause: whether the rat infestation was an act of God. If the court rules it was, then Whole Foods wins the case.

Tipping: Good, but also silly.

While we have the system, tip. But the system doesn’t make much sense: a comprehensive study of Uber and Lyft rides debunks the idea that driver performance would predict tips. “rider-side effects”—the gender of the riders, where they were picked up, how long the trip was, and whether they were routine tippers—explain three times more of the tipping variance than the qualities of the driver or the drive itself."

Our celebration this weekend was amazing. Help us make our seventh year the best yet by supporting us on Patreon—much of this money goes right to publishing original work like our guide to fall flora, a look at a homegrown modern art movement, and a remembrance of a bygone deli
