Black Hawk helicopters are shuttling soldiers across the city. Of course we don’t know much about the program, which started in October, but when the Defense Department asked Congress this month for $2.5 billion, the Army marked the helicopter program as a high priority


Tenants unionize to beat back gentrification, bad landlords

A coalition of residents from all eight wards gathered at All Souls church in Columbia Heights to curb discrimination against minorities by landlords, by joining forces and demanding more rights as tenants. One study claimed DC had the most intense gentrification in the country, leading to cultural displacement as people were pushed out largely along racial lines. 


Where the DC power lunch was born

Recounting the history of Sans Souci: The exclusive French restaurant was the height of glamor in the 60s and 70s, when it turned away a poorly-dressed Mick Jagger and whose maitre d’ studied two newspapers each day to avoid accidentally seating two embroiled parties next to each other. Today, 17th and Pennsylvania houses a...McDonald’s.


Harris’ housing proposal, applied here

It’s unclear whether Sen. Kamala Harris’ housing proposal would have its intended effect in DC given the undefined criteria of what qualifies as “formerly redlined neighborhoods which are still low-income.” Plus, housing costs in DC have appreciated well above the $300,00 limit Harris proposes. 


“They’re acting like the Walmart of medical centers”

Protesters rallied outside John Hopkins Hospital this past Saturday to decry the hospital’s aggressive attempts to collect outstanding medical debt from low-income patients, noting the lawsuits disproportionately targets the city’s African-American population. This is simply the latest example of unsavory behavior from Hopkins—the hospital previously came under fire for blocking nurses’ efforts to unionize.
