‘Bun’s concrete donut

Hirshhorn architectural history distilled: Conceived in the final years of a period of “liberal ambition,” and completed in a new era post-Vietnam, the Hirshhorn straddles the contexts and architectural styles of distinctive historical periods. While Pritzker-winning architect Gordon Bunshaft’s design met some resistance, the UFO/fortress-like structure elevated our stature as an art capital and remains a draw for art and sculpture admirers worldwide.

A hit-and-run on the first day of 2020

In the early hours of New Year’s Day, someone driving an SUV veered off the road, killed a pedestrian at L’Enfant Square, and fled the scene. Last year recorded more road fatalities (27) than did 2015, when the city launched its Vision Zero program to end traffic-related deaths.

Most importantly, it’s an empowering creative outlet: “I feel free … I no longer feel inferior. I can now be heard.”
