Bad day for the Mayor

The DC Council unanimously rejected Mayor Bowser’s veto on an emergency bill that clarified that, yes, the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities is independent. (ICYMI this started when Bowser proposed replacing art grants with loans.) Attorney General Racine’s office also said the mayor’s attempt to take over the commission’s activities was against DC law.

Ghosts? In my Potomac? It’s more likely than you think

About 30 miles south of DC there’s a “ghost fleet” of wooden steamships in the Potomac, dating back to World War I. Called Mallows Bay, it’s one of the largest collections of shipwrecks in the world, and it's now a National Marine Sanctuary. Check the drone footage and learn about em.

The sun sets on a longstanding online community

Yahoo will no longer be supporting its email listservs starting Oct 28th. Included in the casualties is DC’s biggest mailing list, the Cleveland Park Neighborhood listserv, where almost 19,000 members flocked for neighborhood updates, furniture sales, and a dedicated relationship advice column. RIP.

Where DC dogs come from

We’ve got yr cute dog doodles. This interactive, illustrated guide shows you where DC dogs come from. Many came from South Carolina, but there’s a debate about whether transporting doggos across state lines is a good or bad thing.

Take 2

Stephen Strasburg survived an early scare to give six strong innings, and the Nats broke things open with a string of seeing-eye singles in the 7th. Now they're up 2-0 in the World Series with games coming back to DC for the weekend.
