The longtime Three Lions forward will return to England this January after a lightning round with DC United.

Rock Creek (National?) Park

Rock Creek is our country’s oldest national urban park, and while the wilderness of Yellowstone and Zion made the shortlist for those spectacular WPA posters, over a third of National Park sites are now in metro areas. Eleanor Holmes Norton wants the park to get the recognition (and funding) it deserves by adding ‘National’ to the name.

Beyoncé is a national treasure

The National Portrait Gallery is adding a photo of Ms. Knowles-Carter. Shot for Vogue, it shows her wearing a stellar circlet in an English country house. (It’s unclear when it will go on display.)

#ObviouslyDC lives on...

...because hashtags never die. The campaign to court Amazon has been repurposed as a broader economic development platform where businesses can connect with a ‘DC Concierge’ to learn about siting, permitting and hiring in the city. Unclear if the $1 billion in tax breaks offered to Amazon is still on the table.

How cities can solve the climate crisis

CNN did a fun interactive quiz that helps us understand the relative scale of different climate solutions—many of which can happen here in cities:

  • Clean up refrigerants and air conditioning = 629 million cars removed

  • Wasting less food = 495 million cars removed

  • Eating a plant-forward diet = 464 million cars removed

  • Build solar farms = 259 million cars removed

  • Protect coastal wetlands = 22.4 million cars removed

  • More walkable cities = 20.5 million cars removed

  • Smarter thermostats = 18.4 million cars removed
