Fast & Furious: Smart Car

Turns out that drivers can still be extremely dumb even when driving a car whose name suggests otherwise. During a Smart Car race in Italy (??), a driver cut off another driver at a corner (classique), setting off a chain aggression reaction that resulted in several collisions and tumbles. Where’s the scooter race?

“This building was mine”

We’ve written before that while gentrification is happening nationwide, DC has one of the highest rates of displacement as a consequence. This profile of a resident being priced out of a Shaw neighborhood after 40 years—her building was sold and is being redeveloped—pans what the toll of gentrification looks like on a personal level.

Stuck in between 490 and 500 feet with you

The newly-renovated elevator at the Washington Monument was only shuttling between the observation levels, without returning to the ground, for an hour on Saturday.

You know what’s actually scary?

A restaurateur from New York opening a year-round Halloween-themed bar on H St thinks everything in DC turns off at 7 pm and there’s nothing but chains here. Wise up if you want to make it here, buddy!

  • An example of our varied drinking options: Here’s how to sample regional liquors (aka moonshine) from South Korea (makgeolli at Anju), Georgia (chacha at Supra) and Bolivia (singani at Dos Mamis).

This fall at the DC Council

Issues to watch include Councilmember Allen’s bill on charter school accountability, DCRA reforms, pot legalization, and measures towards road safety. The Paid Family Leave law will start applying to private businesses, and there will surely be more Jack Evans drama.

The Las Vegas Aces fed big Aussie Liz Cambage all night en route to a big victory, but our Mystics are still up 2-1 in the series as they look to book a ticket to the WNBA Finals. Belgian sharpshooter Emma Meesseman has been a big part of the Mystics’ feared attack.

Op-ed: Why we’re shutting down DC

Today, local activists are escalating the climate strike by disrupting traffic: “Addressing climate devastation means an end to business as usual.”

Jazz sounds better inside a gallery

Local musician Sam D’Agostino (from bands like Boaty Otis, Bear Cat Wildcat and more) is playing a jazz set with a trio at Lost Origins Gallery in the new Milk Relics exhibition. Free and open to the public. (7pm)

Plan ahead: coworkin’ Wednesday

Join your fancy friends at Eaton House at another pop-up coworking day with Locale! There was a greyhound there last time. I’m not making any promises but…..she was very soft and good. Why risk it?? (10am-5pm)

Reminders from the Weekly Scheduler
