THE FINAL SCORE with
DENIS SAINT-AMAND

After 25 years at Fox Studios, and 12 on the Newman Scoring stage, Supervising Engineer Denis Saint-Amand will be retiring on May 31, 2018. Before his exit, we sat down with Denis for one last Q&A about his many years here and his favorite moments.

Q: How did you get started in the business?
A: Long story short, I was in the right place at the right time.

Q: What are some of your best memories from the scoring stage?
A: Being told I get to work there! Really!  As an overall answer, watching and hearing the downbeat of every session.

Q: What were of your favorite projects to work on?
A: The Simpsons, Avatar, Star Trek, Barbra Streisand, Seth McFarland’s shows; those are some highlights, but truly all the projects are special.

Q: What makes the Newman Scoring stage a special place to you?
A: Being part of bringing it back to life…twice! I was here for the 1996-97 rebuild and then installing the Neve (console) in 2006-07.

Q: What is your favorite piece of equipment on the scoring stage?
A: The Neve Console. If the stage is the body, the console is the heart!

Q: One of the last projects you did was to install a Yamaha Rivage PM10 headphone console on the stage last year.  Why did you choose this product, and what has the response been from clients?
A: We chose the Yamaha PM-10 Rivage console because it was the best fit for our needs and fulfilled everything we desired. The response from clients and crew has been stellar!

Q: What will you miss the most once you’re retired?
A: I am going to miss the orchestra tuning right at the down beat. Once they start, it means I’ve done my job right and I can sit back to watch and listen to amazing musicians.

Q: Any big plans for retirement?
A: Just the usual answers <grin> travel and see the grandkids, Travel and see (fill in the blank)

Q: What do you like to do for fun & what’s a hobby you’ll be spending more time on in retirement?
A: Day to day, become a better chef! Seasonally, going skiing and taking motorcycle road trips.

Q: What do you think your legacy will be on the scoring stage?
A: NO DOWN TIME!

Q: What advice can you give to someone just beginning their career in this business?
A: Pay attention! If you don’t know the answer, admit it; BUT say you will find the answer ASAP. Somebody knows, you just got to find them.

Q: So, are you ready to call it quits?
A: Yep, time to go play! However, I will miss scoring a lot.
